Editing CR2 files

    Which Canon Camera?

Did you import to a Catalogue or a Session?

Did you use the Import function? (If a session)

What choice did you make about the files -

    • bring them in to the Session/Catalogue folder structure?
    • send them somewhere else?
    • leave them where they were?

So you see any symbols around or on the thumbnails (I assume you see the thumbnails).

If so can yu describe the symbols for us please?

Do you get any other messages?

Thanks Grant for the quick response.  The files are from a 5D Mk III. I used the import to catalogue with the files in their original location. I did not do this in a Session. I don't remember choosing other settings. While some have an offline tag most show the preview, note I did have to regenerate previews after import as not all previews were available. Running that feature fixed the problem with only a few exceptions where I get the message the file is not available or not in a compatible format. The ones I'm dealing with now have previews. I should mention that for some previews the icon is blank but the image displays when I click on the area for the preview.  I do not see symbols around the preview. I do see the small icon for preview and a square with lines that I think means keywords but there are no keywords showing. I do not get other messages when I try to rate with a star or colour, or crop. All editing features are greyed out.

For context, I imported some 20,000 images covering the years 2010 to 2016 . I found them on a HDD, they were copies of original CR2 files. I copied all the files to a location on another external HDD with my other files. Names of some subfolders and some files were modified prior to import.

    Ken,

That sounds odd. Rather like the process was struggling for some reason.

If can take a while to finish the Preview and Thumbnail generation after import, especially when a large number is involved. However you have already run the Preview generation once again and it sounds like things are improved but not complete, right?

There are some log files that might give a clue about what is going on but reading and interpreting them may be challenging and perhaps not very helpful unless you feel comfortable reading transactional log files.

Are all of the files definitely CR2 files? Might a few other types have slipped in to the 20k?

    So, what to suggest?

You could verify the Catalogue if you have not already done so. To see if it reports (and fixes) problems. Sometimes the fix process takes more than one pass - for instance if there are several problems for a file that need to be fixed in turn.

If you use the Support Pages Search facility using "verify catalog" you should get the most useful links that cover what is possible at the top of the Left Hand column.

The process should report any problem areas it finds and, hopefully, fixes.

In the case where that process fails repeatedly try going in to the "Preferences" to disable "Hardware Acceleration"  and try again. It may not help at all BUT it is certainly something worth trying. There can be some conflicts with certain files that for some reason do not process cleanly.

If all of that fails it would be worth trying to work out whether there are any common factors for the failing files that are not common to to other, successful, files.

Also worth creating a Support Case   (Submit a Request links at the top right of most of the support pages including the forum pages) to see what the C1 team can uncover - probably starting with them assessing the contents of the Log Files.

Information about where to find the Log Files can be found here:

    https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002405257-How-to-retrieve-Capture-One-logs-

It all sounds a little strange.

It may be worth rebooting the system once or twice if the verification does not work just in case there are some suspect temporary files around that are hindering a clean run of the "cleaning" processes.

    HTH.

Thank you again for all this information. There were some JPG and some TIFF images in the 20,000 and so far they work okay. I verified the catalogs I have, one needed repairs which I did and then it verified properly. I may take a look at the logs. I do agree at this point I should raise a support ticket.

I have the same issue with older CR2 files (Canon 5DR2). My Sony and DNG, PSD, TIFF files are OK. Current Mac OS (10.15.3) and the newest C1 (just installed but the problem existed with the previous version as well).

Well as it turned out, I'm not able to process old CR2 files in Capture One 20 (v3) and since I have LRClassic Ive decided not to look further for a Capture One solution. I'm shooting with Fuji now plus I don't expect to need those old files very often.

    Ken,

Are you using Capture One for Fuji by any chance?

If so the RAW file support available is for the supported Fuji cameras only.

For Canon files the full Pro version is required and that supports Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, etc.

    Akos,

Are you using the Sony version of C1?

If so the same comments apply - but for the Sony files.

Add me to the list of folks having issues with CR2 files. I used a Canon Powershot SX60HS last year to take about 400 CR2 files. I also took some as on the same camera as JPEGs.I also took a lot of photos on an iPhone 7 as DNG and these show up with no problem,   Capture One seems unwilling to recognize the CR2 files. I have tried about three times now and am about to give it up as a lost, mysterious, task.

I thought I had upgraded my Sony versions to the Pro version, but this maybe didn't work?? I have down a pretty complete removal of Capture One and a reinstall a couple of times now with no joy!

The solution is to upgrade to Pro. I had the Sony version because I only use SONY cameras now but when opened a CR2 file is the view only. the Pro works for all.

    CJT,

I think you only need to activate C1 with the Pro license, no need to do a fresh install to activate it.

C1 is picky with raw files if they had been edited by another software, which I experinced with Nikon Nef files and the Nikon raw developer, as it writes data back into the raw file. Maybe this is the case  with your old cr2 files?

    BeO,

when you say "C1 is picky with raw files if they had been edited by another software," You are not kidding! I have some NEF files and they are fine. I have tried 3 different backups and none of them are recognized. I don't think they have been edited. Maybe just looked at is enough??

And because I can edit NEF files, I am sure that I have the full Pro version and not the Sony Pro. I have put in a request to have Capture One check on that.

And to make the whole experience less pleasant, someone hacked my internet card shortly after I purchased the upgrade! Arrgh!!

    thanks,

OK, figured it out. Canon Powershot SX60 HS is NOT on the supported list. None of the Powershot are. No support, no see, no work!

What is curious is that while I tried without success to use these files in C1, if I go to the Finder and folder where those files are located and try an "Open With", the icon shown as default is Capture One 20. Color me totally baffled!

I don't know for the Mac. On Windows, apps register for file extension, regardless of the content in these files.

Maybe you can convert your powershot files with another app to a file format which C1 can use, e.g tiff.

    BeO,

""convert your powershot files with another app to a file format which C1 can use, e.g tiff."  You said--

And that is what I did, and it works. I thought I had checked the camera supported thing, but apparently didn't look closely enough. I had around 500 CR2 files, used DxO, did not take as long as I thought. Maybe 40 minutes? Not over an hour anyway. So far, this seems to work.

    Thanks!

Chris Walton, for now I'm continuing to use LR Classic for my CR2 files. At some point I may upgrade to CaptureOne Pro (I'm using Fuji version right now) or I may use DxO for them. Either way, you have the same decision, upgrade to Pro or use an alternate editing program for your CR2 files.  I sucks I know.

Thanks Ken! Yes I think I will use LR too for now.
