Yes I actually just tried with the card out and it works.

    Why is that?

    Hi there!

Same problem here. Using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II whit which I have tethered via Capture One for years without any problem. For two weeks now I can't connect anymore. This happened during a photo shoot (switched the camera off for a break and when I started it again it wouldn't work anymore!). I now have to tether via Canon Utility (which means that the camera does connect to the computer (macOS Catalina 10.15.3)). I'm still using an old version of Capture One 9.3.0.69. What unsettles me is the fact, that I don't have much choise in the capture preferences. For file end I can only chose between TIF and IIQ (shouldn't there be CR2 to choose?) and for the camera only Contax (not Canon). All that is happening is the blinking "busy" line. This is getting really annoying. Any ideas of what else to check?

For me, except "no CF" nothing else would happen.

Which type of C1 License are you using. Free DB?

C1 V9 is not officially supported for Catalina. Many things seemed to change with Catalina.

There are many articles about tethering and Canon in the support files. Your best option is probably to run a search to see which if any discuss matters that are most pertinent to your needs.

"Yes I actually just tried with the card out and it works.

In general because unless the camera offers multiple connection types options (Some recent Fuji and Sony cameras do), when connected to the computer the computer will see them as a Mass Storage device and immediately try to connect as such, preferring mass storage over a tethering connection (which specifically avoids the camera's storage cards).

For some reason this seems to have become a bigger issues in recent times. Removing the card means that there is no Mass Storage categorisation and so no attempt to connect as such.

That's the simple explanation. For more have a search through the FAQ section to discover some further interesting articles related to you specific situation.
