Vignette
ImplementedNew to and loving Capture One. Been using Lightroom since it's first version. I think C1 is a better RAW converter and as I learn the features I appreciate it more everyday.
I'd love to see the vignette have the midpoint and feather control like LR does. But you could do one better even. How about being able to set the point at which the effect is centered?

The vignette tool just centres around either the crop or the original and is circular or elliptical, depending on the option you choose.
But you can already do all you have suggested if you do your vignette with the fairly recently added Radial mask. Have you tried that?

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your post and the suggestion provided.
Indeed, the Vignette tool centers around the crop or the entire image (this can be changed inside the tool itself).
When using the Radial Gradient Mask, the Vignette tool won't work on the masked area but will be applied to the background instead.
Could you please clarify whether you would like the Vignette tool to center around a manually chosen object anywhere on the image?
Thanks,
Lily

Hi Lily,
I believe Stephen (and definitely I) wants the C1 Vignette tool to have the same level of control as the one in Lightroom has.
The "Midpoint" in the LR Vignette tool controls the size of the vignette.
If one were to create a vignette using the radial tool (or a single Brush application right at the centre) then the "Midpoint" would correspond to the size of the radial mask (or the size of the Brush). The "Feather" in the LR Vignette tool controls the feathering (corresponds to the amount of feathering when using a radial mask or brush).
The "Amount" in the LR Vignette tool controls the level of darkening/brightening (this is already available in C1).The "Roundness" in the LR Vignette tool controls how rounded the edges of the vignette are.
The variability ranges from 90° corners to fully rounded (circle).
I very much would like to see these additional levels of control as well.
I don't understand why C1's Vignette tool is so basic.
I don't think that having to place a radial mask in the centre of the image to emulate a vignette is an appropriate workaround. Note that even then one wouldn't be able to control the roundness of the vignette.
I hope this helps.
P.S.: Personally, I wouldn't need the centre point of the vignette to be controllable via the Vignette tool. If the vignette isn't centred, that's sound more like an application for the radial gradient tool.2 -
Hi,
Thank you for more details and feedback on this matter.
This will be also forwarded to the Product Management team.

I am loving my move from LR, but I too REALLY wish the vignette tool had a bit more control, However what I miss most is not the feather but the "midpoint".
Background- I'm a wedding photogragher, so I work in bulk. I do have a preset for custom vignette's with is really great for one-off editing, but that isn't how I generally work.
My style has always included a heavy handed vignette going fairly deep into the image. In order to get the effect I want in the mid-range of the image, the corners get too dark. I then have to adjust my blacks, but then I loose contrast in the center... I have tried to set up a happy balance, but its a look that is very easy to achieve with lightroom by simply pulling in the midpoint- so my corners don't progressively get darker as I turn up the effect.0 -
Replying to add my support for additional vignette controls. I currently use the radial mask workaround but would just love to have those abilities in the vignette tool itself. Cheers.
