On a Mac, I've used HoudahGeo for years as a preliminary step to importing my photos into C1.

https://www.snafu.org/GeoTag/ (also available in the App store). It's a freebie.  But you might say I'm a little bit biased -- I wrote the app ;)

Thank you Dewey and Marco for your input, much appreciated. My main concern is reverse geotagging which then allows to search for images in C1 based on country, city etc. For years I have been using Lightroom for that and Jeffrey Friedl's excellent plugin. Houdah does reverse geocoding, but using different names database, so results are inconsistent with Lightroom. GeoTag doesn't seem to do reverse at his stage.

I guess one option would be to use Houdah to reverse geotag entire catalog to provide consistency... Not sure if I'm game to do that... :-)

    Thanks again, Peter

I use PhotoMechanic from CameraBits. Works super fast!

I still use gps4cam and their Mac software. They haven’t updated the app for a loooong time but it still works.

But why isn't it built in to C1? This is easily the most glaring missing feature. The last thing I want to do is go to a separate tool for this. If it's a matter of it costing them money to use a mapping API, I'd happily pay more for the software to have a mapping tool built in. So strange.
