AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT compatibility
Hi all
I'm curious if anyone is using this GPU with the latest version of Capture One?
I'm in the market for a new Mac and since wanting more modularity I was considering of going the eGPU route with a Razer Core X in conjunction with an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and probably a Mac Mini or perhaps a 16" MacBook Pro.
I've read there're people who are having issues with this GPU under Windows. They get artefacts in their exports for instance.
Does anyone have any experience with this GPU on a Mac?
Any insights are helpful, thank you.

I only can answers this in general: Yes there are various reports of matters with AMD Radeon 5700, it especially concerns the hardware acceleration, which doesn't seem to work. There is no finally proof but it looks for any issue with the actual AMD driver and the OpenCL support.

From the looks of Apple's website, the Razer Core X eGPU case and AMD Radeon 5700 cards are supported and even recommended by them.
You're probably right about OpenCL support in the current driver might be the culprit since Apple deprecated it in favour of Metal 2 and for good reasons. I do hope that Capture One gets on the Metal2 bandwagon real soon since it will boost hardware acceleration considerably. Sadly they are keeping their lips sealed tight on the question if they are working on implementing Metal 2 or not. I can understand they rather not discuss future versions but with Metal 2 replacing OpenCL, is Phase One really dedicated to develop the best piece of software that they can for the Mac or not? I don't think it's that odd of a question since you invest in a system and prefer to keep working with it in the best possible way. In my regard, Phase One could really be a bit more transparant towards its customers on big technology shifts like that. Other than that, nothing but love for the brand.
Maybe I'm better off with a cheap secondhand AMD Vega 64 until the driver issue with the AMD Radeon 5700 cards are fixed, if ever?

This is not a MAC specific problem, it also exists under Windows, corresponding posts can be found in the AMD support forum too(I'm on a Windows system). Regardless of Apple's development plans, it looks that this is up to AMD.
Obviously this discussion hasn't reached all vendors yet, e.g. a German vendor specialized in high-quality image processing systems (and also C1 reseller) still offers alternative configurations with the AMD 5700 GPU.
Because the situation is unclear to me and neither AMD nor Phase One has a visible solution in sight, I personally decided to buy a Nvidia card for my recent hardware update.0 -
Thank you for your input. Since the problem is cross platform, it’s probably due to the change from the Vega to the Navi architecture. Nvidia isn’t an option anymore since these cards are not supported by MacOS. I guess my safest bet is to go with a Vega 64 for now.

1 - I strongly advise being very cautious about 16" MBP with external monitors. It's a world of hurt. Test it thoroughly within the return window of 14 days.
Thank you for this thread...as I'm considering the AMD 5700 / Razor Core X to "solve" my 16" MBP hellish problems. Reading this, I may go with a AMD Vega 64 over 5700.
Would you mind explaining the risks of going with the 5700?

Hi James
I'm curious as to what your experiences are with the 16" MBP, in what way is it a world of hurt with external monitors?
At the moment I'm leaning more towards getting the 3.2GHz 6-core Mac mini as my current 15" MBP is only close to 4 years old. My 27" iMac, which is a late 2012 model, is still fairly quick but the GPU is massively outdated.
I'm not getting the 5700 XT anymore since there are just too much issues with Navi based cards, both on macOS and Windows. Until AMD fixes this, they're not a wise investment.I got a second-hand Sapphire AMD Vega 64 last week and will be running that. My Razer Core X should normally arrive this Saturday so I'm looking forward to utilise it with my current MBP.

Hi Jan. Based on the rec of several people, I just ordered the 5700XT with the Razor Core X Chroma. I may come to regret the 5700XT, but I can return it if necessary.
As to the 16" MBP, I'm going to a friend's house tonight for a long session of testing / trouble shooting as he has the same spec'd machine as I do. Apple Tech support was a joke. Utter waste of time. I will update you on what we discover, even if we are unable to draw any conclusions. Because, I think people need to be aware of this potential problem within the 14 day return window...and test things thoroughly.
In the mean time, I highly recommend reading at least these two threads:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/16-is-hot-noisy-with-an-external-monitor.2211747/page-70
Basically, I and many others are experiencing heat and fans going through the roof merely by plugging in an external monitor.
Same tasks...without external monitor connected, the MBP is as quiet as a mouse. Heat not an issue. Plug in an external monitor...wait 2 minutes..in IDLE state...fans and temps will start rising. PS...simple dodge curve...brush your image...fans will rev up and down. Again...disconnect the external monitor, perform same dodge task...no problems.
Many are not experiencing these issues at all. Most people are speculating that some monitors...4k ... are not playing nice with AMD 5500 M driver.
"solutions" / hacks are using Turbo Boost Switcher Pro and TG Pro apps to hijack Apple's System for Intel Turbo Boost and heat / fan management. gSwitch too. SwitchResX is also being tried by many. Theory being, if the refresh rate isn't exactly 60hz, it freaks out the AMD5500. Lots of theories as you will read on the threads above. Some of these 3rd party apps certainly helped, but were not complete solutions for *me*. Thus, my purchase of an eGPU. Frankly, I will never buy another "high end" MBP again. Once the new iMacs come out, I will re-evaluate my equipment.

Update: After testing my friend's 16" MBP with an external monitor, the heat / fans insanity is the same on his machine. There is a growing consensus now that monitors that have a refresh rate greater than 60hz (100,120,144hz gaming monitors) are *not* experiencing the horrible performance of a 16 MBP with external monitor. I'm not aware of any photography oriented monitors that are *not* using 60hz refresh rate (BenQ, Eizo). Hopefully my eGPU will solve these issues, otherwise, I'm dumping the 16" MBP because I do a LOT of audio / music production work too...and it's un-useable for audio recording.
Btw, after our tests, my friend returned his 16" MBP for a 13" i7 + eGPU.

Another update: I received my Razer Core X Chroma & 5700XT. I feel I've tested it thoroughly with photo, video, music production applications...and general tasks...performance has been flawless.

For anyone stumbling across this post, here is what one of the issues with the Radeon 5700 XT look like on Windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMOD4RW7AQ0
The bug is most probably related to faulty AMD drivers and there is no fix in sight.
Specs for reference:
- AMD Radeon 5700 XT (Adrenaline driver version 20.7.2)
- Capture One Pro 20 Fujifilm (build 13.1.1.31)
- Windows 10 (2004)

On my side, I had to deactivate the hardware acceleration of my 5700 xt, because it simply destroyed all the exports in JPEG and PNG I could make (initial files were RAF files issued by an X100T Fuji). By destroying, I mean it was like the white levels were way overpushed in the exports. When I switched to CPU only, the issue was gone and my exports were perfect. I regret having bought this graphic card and strongly consider at this moment to get back to a more humble but more reliable 2016 quadro K620. If you are a professional, stuck to a nvidia GPU. I almost wasted one hour to understand what was going on in this export process.... and yes my drivers were the most up to date.
- Capture one 12.1.5.9
- Windows 10 / 10.0.18363 Number 18363
- Sapphire Pulse 5700 xt 8 gos (drivers Radeon 20.7.1)
- AMD 3950x

Isn't deactivating hardware acceleration just wasting the money you spent on the 5700xt? I am not being a smart alec. I am really asking.
All the new iMacs have Radeon 5000 series cards. Every single one. Do I have to choose between Apple and Capture One?
If you cannot afford an iMac Pro or a Mac Pro, what options do you have to use Capture One on a Mac and have it perform optimally (as you would hope on an expensive new iMac) when drawing masks and doing adjustments?
Is there any chance this is why masks are getting corrupted on my MBP?
Any help is appreciated.

Maybe the iMac announcement pushed this issue up the priority list, because as of version 13.1.2 the problem is resolved for me! Editing & exporting with OpenCL enabled finally works with my AMD 5700 XT.
