    If you have the red mask showing, it doesn't hide the objects underneath it in a heal and clone layer. (Otherwise, how would you be able to see whether your mask covered the right part?) Hide the mask (M on the keyboard will do it) and you should see the object you cloned/healed over gone.

    I had this same problem of the red spots and trails of the Heal Brush obscuring what I was doing - as a relatively new user I could not understand it and it was not covered in the online tutorials and webinars, got very frustrated.  Glad I found solution here.
