MacOS can't tether

    Hi Norbert,

Have you tried to tether with the official application by Sony “Remote”? Does it work?

  • Norbert Csoka

Yes. Installed it, the app sees the camera, when I hit connect, it exits.. At least they have the text on their site with "investigating issues with Catalina"
If I change the mode to mass storage, the laptop sees my storage, I've even updated my camera firmware with the cable. So the cable is not the issue (tried different cables, different USB slots, and same thing.. Nothing shows up in CO)

I asked you because I’m using the same camera (Sony A7rIII) with no issue in Sony Remote and in C1 neither.

Hace you set your camera in ‘PC remote’ in USB option?

Yes I have. I've been using CO and this camera in Windows 10 for years now (since it came out). This is the first time I have issues with CO and tethering. Or any other app + tethering. So I know about the settings in camera and in CO.

Could it be a missing permission? I can't even reset those as the command line doesn't work (the one provided by official CO). But I doubt it...

I've even uninstalled CO and reinstalled it 2x

    Are you using Catalina 10.15.4?

Yes Sir, here Mac OS 10.15.4 and A7rIII with 3.10 firmware on board.

I always tether through the USB-C port on camera.

I remember I was having your issue in the first releases of Catalina, but with the 10.15.3 update everything came back to life.

Have you considered to reinstall the last update of Catalina using the Combo Update? If there's somethings wrong with permission this can help...

  • Norbert Csoka

Nope. Like I said, I am new to MacOS, and this issue is driving me nuts! Everything else works..

Was thinking about getting an external SSD and installing Windows on it for gaming and now CO also.

Will that combo update mess up any of my older apps?

I think you should give a try, the combo update is a package that includes all the minor update of Mac OS (10.15.1, 10.15.2...). Sometimes is useful to repair something that went wrong in past updates.
If all your apps works now there’s no reason to give a try, you can find it here:

If you would be kind enough to check in Security & Privacy in what tabs do you have CaptureOne

(I have it in Reminders, Accessibility, Full Disk Access and in Files and Folder).

thank you. In the meantime, I downloaded and installed that "update". Will check tomorrow, as my a7riii is at work and the a7iii is lended to a friend.

Possibly a 'silly' suggestion but I experienced this exact same issue when upgrading from C1 10 to C 11. In C1 10 tethering worked perfectly fine when I had SD cards in my camera but as soon as I updated to C1 11 tethering stopped working. If I removed both the SD cards, C1 11 suddenly recognised my camera and tethered as expected.

Confused and not wishing to reformat my SD cards because they contained thousands of images I purchased a new 'empty' (obviously) SD card, formatted it in my camera and then tried to tether using C1 11 with the card still in the SD slot and miraculously tethering worked again so something clearly changed between versions to prevent tethering working with the same SD cards in the camera that functioned perfectly okay in C1 10.

Just a long shot, but if you happen to have SD cards in the camera, try taking them out to see if it makes any difference.

I don't use SD cards. It's set to save directly and only to PC. Will try to insert one however, to see.

Seems like Apple is a pile of horses**t. I've switched to Mac to simplify my life, but so far NOTHING is going smoother than Windows. Apps are working the same, no extra speed, no nothing. As a matter of fact, the pen tool with rubber band mode in Photoshop has serious lag!! It's like running on a 10yo PC. Processing and filters work fine, but that rubber band lags like crazy.

Now CaptureOne started to act.. I really don't understand how the hell is this possible as it's a brand new 2 months old Mac 16". Freshly unboxed.

Resetting the laptop is not an option as it is fresh.. It came with 10.15.2 or 3 I believe. So there were no major updates to corrupt stuff. As happy as I was with my mac a month ago, that's how frustrated I am now.. No tether app works! (haven't tried Lightroom yet, but C1 NoGo, Image Edge NoGo...)

Inserting a card won't make any difference as C1 doesn't save tethered images to the SD card. I figured it was a long shot but just thought it was worth a punt having seen something similar in a previous version.

Would have to disagree with you, I've used Apple computers since 1984 and never really had any problems, Windows on the other hand, nothing but problems, especially early versions of Windows 10, an absolute nightmare. I think you've perhaps just been unlucky.

The latest release of C1 is extremely buggy to say the least. If this was my first experience of Mac, running C1 v 20 and also experiencing the same issues with Photoshop I'm sure I'd be thinking the same thing but I have no doubt if you look at some of the Photoshop forums you'll read about the same issue.

As a long time Adobe user using their software since 1987, I abandoned them when they moved to their subscription model and I now work with C1 and Affinity Photo, Designer and Publisher which for what I do suit my needs perfectly.

Forget resetting your laptop, not once in all the time I've been using Apple products has that ever fixed any problems, it is extremely unlikely to be the OS trust me.

Stick with the Mac, you'll grow to love it...

Did you have installed something about Google apps on your Macbook? (like google drive, etc...).
Because I remember that in the past Catalina update Google Drive process in background caused a lot of problem, even with Sony Remote app.

So I did this just to try another scenario:
    - Created a new account on my mac with administrator privilege
    - Logged in
    - Opened Sony Remote and connected my camera
    - It worked
This happened because on the new account there weren’t processes starting at login.

Try and let me now, we are here to solve problem, not to start another Mac Vs Windows war.  ;)

I am also slowly going Affinity suite. Mostly Designer (switched from Corel + Illustrator) and now playing with Publisher. They are smooth as butter!! (but were so on Win10 too). Not jumping into Photo as I have a lot of photoshop plugins I use, and AP is still kind of "beta" with no smart objects and so on. I am waiting for it to catch up a bit more and will abandon the last Adobe app I use.

I work as a product photographer, and now without tethering it's WAAAAAY harder to get a good image.

I know it has a LOT of bugs, one of them is the option+reset .. For some reason it won't temporarily reset the image. But if I option+reset tools, the command works.

It bugs me even more now, as for Karl C1 tethering and Image Edge (sony) tethering is working fine, and I have issues with both..

Option+reset has been replaced with the Y key in 20.1/13.1.   If you have modified the default keyboard shortcuts you might need to add that to your custom set of shortcuts.

Y shows before/after or brings up the new slider to do the same.   shift-Y swaps between using the slider vs showing the entire image.

    Thank's for the Y info.. Didn't know that :/

I bet I can throw my loupedeck away now :)) As that baterly functioned with CO12.

Is there a way to do a CLEAN install of C1? There is some mention on the site, I uninstalled the app, manually deleted the leftover files, but there was a terminal command that didn't work. In fact NONE of the written terminal commands worked that I have found on the site (there is a FAQ with tethering and Catalina, with a command that resets the access prompts).

Affinity Photo 1.8 has introduced support for Smart Objects and there is a 'level' of support for plug-ins, though you'd have to check which are compatible. I think the list is likely to be short but certainly worth a look.

They are currently offering a lockdown special 90 day trial version and to buy there is currently a 50% discount on the retail price so you can't really go wrong at that price.

I'm really hoping the bugs introduced in the latest release will be quickly resolved as for me the C1 is really genuinely unusable at the moment, spending hours retouching an image only to lose all the changes (this has happened on four attempts now) because the mask fails to load along with the numerous other issues being reported. It seems as though the new heal and clone brushes in particular have a lot of bugs sadly.

I'm not experiencing the Option Reset bug mind you, for me that is working as it always has...

The terminal command to throw away Capture One preferences is

    defaults delete com.phaseone.captureone13

Quit Capture One.   Run that command.  Then restart Capture One.   It should start as if the program was freshly installed.  You will need to restore any customizations you've made.

Absolutely no tethering apps work.. I have tried Lightroom 9.1 (not the latest) Imaging Edge (latest) Capture One (latest) and nothing works. Tried with different cables, different USB ports. I tend to believe it's an OS issue. And I can't fix it, not sure if ANYONE can. Thank you apple for the fu***ng mess (as all tethering stopped when they fucked up with Catalina).

OH MY GOD!... It's finally working. And you will NEVER guess the reason why it didn't work. It's freaking STUPID!!!! And I had to fid out about this from Imaging Edge site.

Imaging Edge will not work if Dropbox, Google Backup and Sync, CO (not the case) or lightroom is running in the background.

So I quit the only app that was running from that list, Google B&S, and it started working (I always turn off external storage sync with those apps, so I am not sure WTF is going on). Imaging Edge and Capture1 too.

CO should really add this to their Catalina Fix section.. I would have never guessed that an app like that could cause issues. Lulu, Cleanmymac and others were on my list.

    Great news!

I told you that there was some process in background which probably was in conflict with the camera.

Yes, but Google Sync?... would have NEVER though of that. Also there were no mentions of this in forums whatsoever. In the meantime I had a product shot, and it was horrible without tethering.
