Add AUTO brush selection (Do NOT consider universal brush)
ImplementedI love new way of having three brushes as now C1 works similar as other graphic software. Also it enables me to work way faster (unattended) from different TAB and without need to create certain layer in advance. All great, but there are mistakes when we forget to switch brushes. I have simple suggestion - ADD auto brush selection according to layer selected.
Since this topic was "completed" in previous two instances (before all comments came in) I'm adding new simplified suggestion.
Some suggest "universal brush" should come back. That brus in essence would need to adapt to layer and essentially become proper brush for layer type. If only one universal brush would come back we would loose all new functionalities and need to create layer(s) in advance again. I'm not fan of going back. Also old brushes were awkward in heal/clone mode since you painted blindly before selecting sampling spot.
What I suggest is to add "auto selection" of "brush type" in order of "layer selected". And give that as an option in preferences: "select proper brush type when layer is selected -> yes / no".
Current way of automation: selecting brush B, Q, S, creates or switches to proper layer.
Added automation: selecting a layer will switch to proper brush for that layer.
Benefit of current way is well obvious. Benefit to added (optional) functionality is also preventing mistakes of being on wrong layer with wrong brush and keep all advances of new separate brushes. One can work from both directions: either crate layer and paint (or alt+select sampling spot and than paint), either select brush and start painting and layer will auto-create. Best of both.
Best regards,
MIAEL

"If only one universal brush would come back we would loose all new functionalities and need to create layer(s) in advance again."
The "Universal Brush" suggestion you are referring to did not propose to undo all new functionality.
It is perfectly fine to have different tools/shortcuts that create a certain layer type and select a brush in one step."Also old brushes were awkward in heal/clone mode since you painted blindly before selecting sampling spot."
If one wanted to, one could select a sampling area in advance already.
I find the old behaviour to be preferable because it allows both ways of working: a) try your luck and b) define the source area as the first step. Forcing the user to chose a source area when cloning is not as nice, but acceptable.
"Added automation: selecting a layer will switch to proper brush for that layer."
I don't think that's optimal because brushes are not the only mask creation tools for layers. There are linear and radial gradient tools as well. If someone wants to use the linear gradient tool on multiple layers, they should be able to without having their tool selection changed to a brush tool all the time.
So I think what you probably want is 'Selecting a layer will switch to the matching brush tool for the layer, in case any brush tool is currently active'.
I believe both our suggestions are arguing that it is fine for users to switch to a different layer via layer auto-selection, if they choose one of the specialised brushes while working on a layer, i.e., after having selected the layer. However, what isn't OK is for the layer selection to change if one starts brushing with the "wrong" brush tool. The latter can be avoided by automatically adjusting the brush tool to the layer selection, after the layer selection has been made.
Agreed?
P.S.: I'd never ever make use of an automated layer selection functionality, but I'm fine for this to be available for other users.
Likewise, there might be users who would never want to choose a brush tool once and then never have to change it again, even if they are switching layers, but these users should also allow others to work differently (more efficiently).0 -
Hi Mihael,
Thank you for your post.
We have a couple of similar suggestions where the Brush type should be automatically selected depending on the Layer type.
Thus, I will submit your request to the Product Management team as well.
Hopefully, your feedback contributes towards a future version of Capture One.
