Will Capture One xmp side car files clobber existing ones from other product?

    Capture One does not store it's adjustments in sidecar files.   It may copy metadata to sidecar files, but only if you ask it to.  Edit: and I think it overwrites the XMP file in that case, but am not positive.

    Look at the Image tab in Preferences.  The preference you are interested in is Auto Sync Sidecar XMP.  If you set it to none Capture One wont write sidecar files unless you ask it to via the menu, Image -> Sync Metadata.

    If you use a catalog Capture one keeps all of its adjustments and metadata in the Catalog.  If you use a session you'll find a Capture One folder in your session folders.  All adjustments, masks, metadata, etc., for the images in your session folder are stored somewhere in that Capture One sub-folder hierarchy.

    A "session folder" is any folder you visit when a session is open, not just the Capture, Selects, etc., folders.

    Also, it is difficult to actually compare settings. For instance the clarity tool in Loghtroom behaves totally different from the CO1 one. So even the same setting for sure produces totally different results. Also for instance the color tools work different. So a side-by-side comparison is difficult. What might be interesting though is a comparison of default settings.... maybe.

    Hi,

    I would suggest to import only the RAW files, and not the .xmp (discard .xmp files in Capture One). Then, if you want to compare, process a "test" picture in Capture One and compare it to the result you obtained in On1 RAW. In any case, don't try to apply the same values or positions to adjustment cursors in Capture One as those in On1 RAW : the algorithms are completely different, and the tools as well.

    When I moved from Lightroom to Capture One, I also tried to "compare" images processed in both softwares. No way, IMHO, it's always a very good experience to 're-think' a picture in a new software, and not to try to obtain the same result.

    Thank you all for the helpful replies!!

    @Robert Farhi:

    Is there a way when setting up and import, when you point it to a directory, to have it ONLY import the RAW files and not the .xmp files that are in that same directory too?

    Again, thank you all for the help!!

    Preferences, Image tab.  Set Auto Sync Sidecar XMP to None.   I think Capture One will then ignore XMP files unless you ask.

    I'd make a couple of test imports to check that out.
