I have really struggled with the import of new images from e.g. an SD card and can't figure out how to get them into a catalogue that makes sense - ideally I would like to import the contents of an SD card to a catalogue named with the subject matter, e.g. "Womad festival" - I can't however understand how one can create a catalogue located on my Macbook Pro but have the images on a separate hard drive....and I feel Aperture is much more intuitive. I've watched the videos on You Tube numerous times but find they don't help much. What I'd really appreciate is the ability to ring someone up and have them talk me through the process while I do it.

I am not an "expert" on the use of C1 but normally am in the position of importing images that are on a different volume than where the catalog is located, so perhaps I can help. As I said, please keep in mind that I am not an expert on C1 although I have been successfully using it for the last 18-24 months.

I work on a MacBook Pro and my main memory is limited to a 512 GB SSD. Because I do not consider that to be enough memory to store my data, apps and digital images I have a separate usb drive that I keep mounted for storing my digital images. My normal process (which I understand is different from yours) is to copy my images directly, using Finder, from the camera flash memory to that external usb drive. My C1 catalogs are kept on my main SSD (under Pictures) so my images are stored on a separate volume from my catalog. While my specifics are different from your they fall into the same category.

    My process is as follows:

    1) Copy images from camera flash memory to external usb drive.
    2) Open C1, create a new catalog (File -> New Catalog) which I give an appropriate name, specify the ssd location for my catalog, check Open in new window and then press OK.
    3) Press the Import button,
    4) In the dialog box marked IMPORT FROM I set the Location of the images to be imported (Select Folder), set the IMPORT TO Store Files setting to Current Location and the Collection to Recent Imports Only. This will create a catalog with pointers to the actual images on your media which may be a flash card or an external drive of some kind. I then set ADJUSTMENTS to Auto Adjust and my Styles to None.
    5) Select the images you want to import and then press the import button.

C1 will build a catalog for your images. Your adjustment information will be stored in the catalog but, based on the Current Location setting, the images will not be copied to your main memory. You next click the Library tab and, under Folders, select the location of your actual images. C1 then will display the images in the filmstrip and you can begin to process.

Just to clarify, prior to storing my images on an external usb drive I used to store them on a special flash memory card called a JetDrive which sat semi-permanently in my ssd slot. Thus my working environment was essentially identical to what you want to do - store your images on flash memory and your catalog on your main memory. All of this works perfectly and I have never had a problem with the setup once I learned about the Current Location setting.

One last comment - I see no reason you could not store your catalogs on the same flash memory card as your images although this would probably slow up your processing quite a bit.

I don't know if this is of any help to you at all since I am not sure I have answered your actual questions. I responded to what I believe you are asking but I can not be sure I have actually supplied the information you actually wanted. If I did respond correctly and if what I have posted is not clear I can take some screen shots to point out what to set and when.
