Is your question regarding variants or about how to separate them with albums, or about automating the process?

I think I can help explain what the OP wants.

In Lightroom you can select several images and then create a new collection (album). There is also an option to create the collection with virtual images (variants) This is a quick way to produce a new collection with virtual images that can then have a different preset / style added to them.

    e.g.
I have a collection called 'My Dog' that contains 50 images of my dog. I select all the images in the collection and then create a new collection (named My Dog B&W) based on my current selection but also with the 'create virtual image' option enabled.

I end up with another collection called 'My Dog B&W' which contains virtual images (variants) that I now set all to Black & White. Now I have two collections with the same images but different treatments.

I'm not sure how you would do this in CO.

I would create a clone variant for each image and put them in a smart album, based on a distinct aspect like a color tag or rating, or keyword.
