Tethered Nikon Shooting (Again)
Hi List
Sorry I know that this has been covered many times, I am aware reading the release notes that continued tethered shooting with Nikon cameras will result in issues, lost connection, captures that stop on transfer etc..
I am just keen to know if anyone who uses CO6 every day with Nikons tethered has found a solution that gives more stability when shooting tethered ?
I have tried longer/shorter USB cables, powered hub, different USB cables, some bought from the States etc etc..
I use a MacPro running Lion, my OS and Phase s/w are latest versions.
I only have Capture One running on my main machine so my set up is as "clean" as I can get but I still have lost connections and freezes every day when using various Nikons tethered.
Any help, suggestions please.
I have posted that I am using a work around to shoot with my new Nikons (D800E / D4) but this issue relates to existing camera's D3x, D700 etc
Many thanks
Andy

ciao andrew,
i experimented better connection with 10.6.7
now i'm on 10.6.8 for nikon matters and is worse.
i just worked with d800 before to see your post about connections workaround, too bad!!
i was in a remote area without internet connections unfortunately
now i copy and paste the file, so next time i'll rent i can try!
i couldn't find a usb3 long cable, so even if i have a pci card with usb3 i couldn't use and i went through an amplified usb2 cable: any news about a proper usb3 long cable?
thanks
best

since i shoot only tethered i know the issues you are talking about. our 700's were constantly loosing connection or Capture would freeze up. There was an upadte to capture 6.3.4? i think that help stability a lot but we still had issues. I found turning off all energy saving on my mac helped. If you leave the computer alone and are shooting to an external drive the drive may go to sleep and C1 freezes. So I forced my computer to stay awake for ever, with scheduled sleep times from 9pm to 9am. this helped me with some freezes. I would still get the occasional freeze. If a camera battery dies while tethered C1 can freeze up, when the camera re-connects. Best thing to do is use good cables, and a power adapter for the camera.
check tether tools for USB3 extensions. they will be available in a couple weeks. i wish someone would make a Thunderbolt to USB adapter so i could connect that way. I noticed when using a Phase One back with FW800 there were no connection issues. and even fewer freezes. the FW connection is a lot more stable imo. and since Macs dont and likely wont support USB3, we will have to settle for USB2 or Thunderbolt.
another option for connectivity issues is a USB adatper to CAT5E, longer cords and possibly more stable data transmission.0 -
Hi Andrew
Well it sounds like your days shooting are exactly the same as mine !
I have also shot with FW with Phase backs and they are very reliable, I do miss this but its the flexibility of the Nikons that make it worth persisting.. I've also been the TetherTools route, I have tried their cables, in fact over the past couple of years I think I've tried everything, then tried it all again when the s/w moves to a new version, only to experience the issues you seem to be experiencing each working day 😊 Its a shame as it takes the edge off an otherwise good days shooting when I'm forced to drop to my knees and coax my USB cables to transfer the latest capture into my MacPro !!
I'm very interested in your comments on the Mac energy saving, I'll certainly try this tomorrow, also your right if the Nikon battery dies (or even drops very low) this seems to cause issues, freezes, crashes. Its certainly worth changing the battery before it drops to a minimum level.
Thanks for your reply, its good to share real world experiences, I have been shooting last week with my Nikon D800E and I have been completely knocked out by the quality of the files, its like looking again at captures from my Phase p45 back, the new Nikon is awesome, the combination of the D800E and Capture 6 software is a stunning combination.
All the best
Andy0
