more accurate masks?

    Maybe the best thing is to draw it as accurately as you can but without too hard an edge (which can look too obvious) and then to use the refine mask and feather mask options to tweak it.

    thanks ian. I always use refine & feather but I will try softening the hardness.

    Depending on circumstances, colour selection might be an option for helping to create a mask's edges.

    Also work at 100% or larger when assessing the results.

    However, if you working in something with a lot of detail and maybe not pixel perfect separation opportunities it is possible that the artistic editing concepts of drawing product based applications like PhotoShop and Affinity, etc., might make the task easier to complete to your satisfaction after RAW conversion has finished.

    Much depends on the image and what you are hoping to do with it.
