Which Version Of Capture8 is the most stable?
I have been using 8.2.2 for the last 2 days on a new iMac 5K with 10.10.4 OSX and Most of the time when my camera falls a sleep and I turn it on again the connection is lost somehow and it makes me have to force quit capture and restart it then connect my camera again? Also when doing Contact Sheets I get crashes 80% of the time when I hit export..???
I was working with a top photographer and director in New York and they told me they have not gone past 8.1.2 because of problems? Is there any "known" pretty stable version of Capture 8 that most are happy with? When I was on version 6 and 7, I stayed on a certain version as it worked great and if ain't broke why fix it. On the same version that is..
Thanks for any advice, Does Capture have any kind of Un-install everything option as I could try re installing it again..?

The Windows versions seem remarkably stable!

I have had a lot of trouble with tethering my Canons in CO v8. (Support case filed.) All of them caused by waking up the camera or the MBP. Therefore I disabled camera sleep and MBP sleep while tethering. And I still do.
The latest version, v8.3.3, didn't hang or crash on waking up the camera during a test shoot I did at home. My camera was re-connected correctly. But I wouldn't take my test shooting as a general 'go'.

Why don't you try installing 8.3.3 seperately? You don't have to overwrite your previous version.
To me, knowing how much is fixed for each version, staying on 8.1.2 and even 8.2.2 is just stubborn for almost superstitious reasons.0 -

I am running 8.3.3 and update regularly, but before I retired from the software business I used to be involved in the support of my company's software. We analyzed the system dumps and wrote and issued fixes, so the mix of software versions among our customers was of some concern to us.
In fact I knew of many individuals and companies that had the policy of only upgrading every other release and only installing updates and fixes if those updates and fixes applied directly to them and solved existing problems for them. Their rationale was that if they were stable and productive on some version, what benefit was there to them to update (or upgrade) if the update (or upgrade) did not contain some material benefit to their work as they then risked the chance of new bugs and changed procedures.
Our support rules were that we only supported one release back so everyone upgraded at least that often, but they had solid reasons for not upgrading or updating. Those reasons made our job much more difficult (and reduced our revenue) but I never felt that they were stubborn or superstitious, only trying to stay profitable and stable.
People may have very good reasons for not updating or upgrading, especially if they use the software in a business and that software is running properly for them. Why upgrade if the upgrade only includes new camera profiles if you are not using those cameras? Why upgrade if the upgrade fixes bugs (like remote tethering) that you don't see because you don't use that functionality?
As I said, I upgrade and update regularly, but I do understand why others may not. Just my opinion.0 -

Upgrading only each 2nd service release or so is fair enough in a production enviroment, however, if someone tells you "never upgrade from 8.1.2" when 8.3.3 is available, and many months have past, that is a very different story.
I absolutely understand the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it", but which each release we can bring features, bugfixes (likely to the very problem encountered), performance-enhancements and so on. Things that can help make better images or optimize workflow.0 -
Thanks for the replies, I guess every machine is different and camera, But I have too much riding on my workflow with clients around me and I cannot and do not except mis haps due to Applications. I just mentioned that a famous photographer I was working with told me they stayed on 8.1.2 as all the other updates they had problems with. That was 2 months ago so maybe 8.3.3 has fixed things, I actually wasn't sure you could run 2 different version 8's on a computer, I will have to try that. I have the same problem as the some above this post, when my canon sleeps 8.2.2 with Canon 5DMIII forces me to quit the programs as it hangs and never regains connection, Have not tried with my P30 but have not used that in a while.
I was not knocking any version just wanted to see if there was a "more" stable version that some where sticking with. Like I said if it is not any major update and it works, I prefer not to update. I updated a 6 version one time on set and all the files that where imported some how had the right MB but right in front of my eyes they all went to O bytes and could not be saved, good thing I caught it before the whole day was ruined.
Sorry if anybody was offended by the question, I felt it was a legitimate question.
Thanks

I have used 6.45 with 10.8.5 for over a year and is starting to act flakey. V7 would tether fine but editing was IMPOSSIBLE, so therefore useless to me.
My software HAS TO WORK and therefore "if it aint broke" I have NO REASON to change. I remember when V 3.79 would tether and WAS stable. Now Im left with V8, and having to upgrade SS (UUGGGGHHHH). So I'm done with my rant, Best Regards:)0 -

Good thing I never need to edit with Capture. I just use it to tether and have for the last 10 years or so. And I agree, My version 5 and 6 tethered fine no hiccups worth mentioning. I use Capture to convert the Raws and off to photoshop.
Funny how they are suppose to advance with computers and software and some how they go backwards sometimes. I guess the people that jump on the updates do not have a business or workflow that cannot get interrupted, Because I NEVER update any software, OS or anything until people have used it for a while and it has a good "review". There is NO room for error with my clients.
No one has really mentioned which version works the best at the moment..

Wow Eric, we have a couple of things in common:) !!!
I did start nearly an identical thread, and unfortunately we must be asking for too much.......Is it possible that we are trying to thread the needle when we need to have a more general approach (rhetorical ?)?
I use a 5d mk3, and tether with a MBP, and I'm sure you have a unique setup as well.......I have ZERO problem with any other software on my setup (ZERO:) Maybe its time to look elsewhere......
However, it would be GREAT if someone (ANYONE:) would chime in and say, my setup is GREAT (!) and am happy as a pig in slop (in my case, that person would a 5d mk3 person with a MBP:)
Eric, hang in there help could be on the way.......0 -
When did You guys try out latest v8?
Also, remember that the nature of a forum is primarily used for problem-solving, and more rarely for praise. So the balance seen on a given forum, is rarely a true mirror of the real-world situation.
As always, if you have a problem with CO, create a support-case. You get help, and we are able get hard data and statistics on potential problems, so they can be fixed quickly. We do specifically test with MBP's and 5dmk3, but we can't trigger all the issues You seem to have with this combo.0 -

I believe that statement to be completely true and, given that problems are the main concern of a forum like this, I believe it is time for a bit of praise.
I have been using C1 for years and have to say it is one of the more stable and dependable pieces of software I have used. It is true I do not use tethering so I have not seen the issues mentioned in this thread but I can only think of one real problem I have had with C1 in all of the time I have used it and the developers fixed that issue quickly when I filed a bug report. Almost all other problems I have seen with C1 have been user problems and instruction on how to properly use C1 have fixed those issues.
Good work C1 developers and thank you for a stable product.0 -

I have been using 8.3.3 and it has been quite solid and I have very happy with the performance and reliability.0
