"Open with" menu is full of duplicates

When I right click on a file in my session and select "Open with", the list of applications in the drop down list shows multiples of of to 6 for each item, e.g., Photoshop CS 6 is listed 6 times, Color Efex Pro 4 is listed 5 times, etc.

Is there a way to clean this list up?

  Can you check whether the "Open with" menu in the Finder shows the same duplicates?
  
  If so, you need to rebuild the Finder's launch service database. The first google hit gave this: .

  I already tried a terminal command that was slightly different from that one but that one one didn't clear up the problem. (it's amazing how quickly these things can get so messed up - I bought the computer from Apple less than 2 weeks ago).
