Disappointed Pentax K-30 Not Supported

Hey Paul - while the Phase One team does monitor the forums, it's primarily for users.

The best thing you could do is login to your account at phaseone.com and actually create a support case and put in a feature request.

Having said that, the way Capture One handles support of cameras actually has to do with whether the manufacturer of the camera has released an updated SDK for that camera model's file types or not.

While lack of demand for support for Pentax cameras is always a possibility, it's just as likely that the PhaseOne team has the K-30 on it's radar but if Pentax hasn't released/updated their SDK for the camera... there's nothing that can be done to make it work in Capture One unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply Brian. I had already logged a support case a while ago.

What I did find disappointing was that the latest update supported the K-5 11 and K-511s which were newer releases than the K-30. 😕

Has even a software like ACDsee Pro can support it quickly and without a problem does not bode well for my expectations of CO.

So it looks like I am back to Lightroom (who do support it) for the foreseeable future.

You know what, they like to be begged for the support of such "exotic" cameras as the K-30 (or Pentax in general). I find that frustrating and as much as like working with C1 v.6 Express on my K10D files I know that when I buy a new camera I'll have to look for a new converter. True, the quality is there with C1, but for that price I don't feel like begging for a support of my camera -- it's that simple.

I could not agree more and think the biggest mistake I made was upgrading to CO7 and wasting my money thinking it would be supported.

All I can say is that if it is not supported soon I will be moving away from CO7 and MP .

On the many forums I frequent I have always been a good ambassador for CO's software singing it's praises since v3 but no more and just the opposite in future.

Paul, I share fully your opinion. I submitted a ticket already in summer. I found a workaround by creating a special color profile for the K-30 DNGs with a color checker chart. But this was only a compromise and C1 showed some strange limitations with this profil. Then the switch to 64-bit with C1 v7 came. So I gave up and returned to LR. With C1 v6, I found a nice method to avoid the pollution of my image directories with C1 metafiles, but with LR this is no longer required. So I spent effort with C1 for nearly nothing. Quite similar with MP v1.3.1. But I have learned a lot through this painful journey. E.g. that a good forum is mandatory. This base is existing with P1 products at least. Thanks to you!

My ticket for K-30 disappeared without notifcation and all my old solved tickets too. With this the user has no transparency if his feature request is still known at P1.

But to be positive, there is something worse: That is the way IDimager treated its good forum members and software users during abandoning its good DAM software. Hope that will not happen with MP, because I am convinced, that a DAM and a RAW/Image-Editor HAVE TO BE SEPARATED tools. But the interface of both tools has to be highly flexible and that is the challenge.

    Kind Regards, Joseph

Joseph if you convert the K-30 DNG files with the latest Adobe DNG Converter that has recently been released CO7 now handles them fine with no colour caste. 😊

    Paul,

thank you very much for the tip. I am using the new AdobeDNGConverter, but did not test yet C1 v7. Since only two months I replaced my Win7-32bit with a 64-bit machine. So I am motivated now to try the trial version 7 of C1. May be I will return from LR to C1 or use both forever?

Does you statement mean that the original DNGs from K-30 are not supported, but the converted K-30 DNGs are supported? I was always wondering why a AdobeDNGconversion of a DNG does makes sense and why the K-30 compatibility is listed in the camera list of AdobeDNGConverter? My reason to convert DNG was just to replace the embedded preview with a low resolution preview. This because I extract the big preview as separate JPG with ExifTool and like to have the DNGs as small as possible and see no need to store the hig resolution preview two times (in DNG and JPG). And because some image software is using only the mebedded preview of DNG. So this software is faster with display and most important: You detect immediately if software does use the preview instead of raw data for processing. That is very important!

For some strange reason they are no longer displaying correctly when converted even thought the first ones I converted did.

So it is back to waiting for PhaseOne to support it. ☚ī¸

What happens on PhaseOne website? The german language site says, that Pentax K-30 is not supported, but on the english site it says, that K-30 is supported.

    DE: www.phaseone.com/de-de/Supported-cameras.aspx?camera=Pentax
    EN: www.phaseone.com/en/Supported-cameras.aspx?camera=Pentax

What is true? Does it depend on C1, K-30 or Windows language setting?

    Regards from Joseph

What is true? Does it depend on C1, K-30 or Windows language setting? If K-30 support, is it the real full support for both original and DNG converted camera DNGs without the strong color deviation demonstrated in my initial posting?

It now works great on my windows 7 64 bit machine and the quality of the K-30 conversions are very good on the original files, I have not tried converted DNG's.

It's been a long wait but they seem to have done a good job. 😊

    Both sites are now aligned.
German site was still listing support in 7.1.1
From release of new content, it might take up to 24h before all language versions of the website are updated.

    Thank you Paul and Ulf,

that motivates for further K-30 investigation.
May be it is good to keep C1 and LR always parallel active and licensed?
You do not save time and money, but gain a lot of experience.

    ....

I think so, as that is what I do. Each has their strengths and weaknesses.
I try to use the one that fits the particular set of photos the best. I probably use C1/LR 80/20.
