BW and color copies

First post, so I hope this hasn't already been done.
I'm transitioning from LR and what I'm having trouble with in Cap1 is actually very easy in LR, which might be part of my problem.
Here's what's up:
I have large-ish body of photos taken over the last year or two.
For the finished project, I'd like some in BW and some in color.
What I want is to be able to take my body of images, make copies of everything, and be able to view them in BW and in color. Ideally, I'd like to have two separate user collections.
This sounds simple, and it's only a few clicks in LR to make virtual copies and then use them just as if they were regular files.
Here are my problems in Cap1:
First, when I attempt to make new variants of multiple images, something goes wrong. I shift click or cmd-a to select a batch, right-click, "new variant".... and it only makes a copy of the image with the THICK highlight around it.
I'm sure there's a way to make variants of a large number at once, but it's not working.
What am I doing wrong?
Second, when I do work on a variant (convert to BW) it applies the effect to both the variant and the original...
And it seems like I can't move a variant into a new collection just by itself.
Can anyone help me out here?
I like Cap1 a lot, but find LR much easier to use for this kind of thing.
Should I use LR to edit (that is, 'select') photos and Cap1 to work on color, etc?
I'd be much happier just working in one app.

On (1) make sue to toggle on the setting to Edit all Selected Variants , either on the Edit menu, or using the button on the toolbar (it looks like 3 stacked rectangles).
On (2) make sure that you have only the variant you want to affect selected. Also beware of the buttons on the toolbar to vciew only the primary variant or all selected variants (respectively a single frame or a grid of 4 small frames). It sounds like you may have more than one selected but don't see them all.
I tend to use Sessions not Catalogs, but I think that you. can't put variants of the same image in different collections, though a Catalog used may be able to say more. (There have been other threads on this, so worth sarching.)

Personally I use smart albums and keywords to have variants in different albums. For example, I include the keyword "B&W" for all black and white variants. I have created a smart album adequately set to be populated by all variants having B&W as a keyword.
