I suggest you check that the menu item <View>/<Browse Labels> is set to <Edit Mode>.

The numeric keys 0-5 can also be used to set the rating.

    Cheers,

I too have this problem. I can set ratings on some images and not others. The difference seems to be the presence of a little box with three horizontal lines in it next to the five dots that you click on to set ratings. If the box is present, ratings are possible. If the box is not present, clicking the dots has no effect.

Paul - I did check the 'edit' setting. It's on. Does not help.

Hmm, could you perhaps post a screen shot? I still am not confident we are on the same page.

If you can make the screenshot accessible on the internet, you can here post the link to it.

    Paul: go to

The left and right images on the filmstrip are in the "can't rate" group. Instead of the little box with three horizontal lines next to the dots, they have eyes (by the way, what do those symbols mean?).

They are explained in the online help. I believe the meaning of them will provide you with valuable hints as to what might be the problem.

At times, the proper thing to do is to throw a person a lifebelt.

Sometimes a couple of fish might be the better choice.

Or giving him a fishing net.

How droll. Let me lay out the problem for you, sunshine. I use Lightroom but took advantage of the offer of a Sony-only version of C1 to try it out. At the time of my question I had been trying it out for 3 days. I read the online help but you know, I didn't remember all of it. When I searched it for terms I thought might be useful I came up with nothing (I had not yet noticed the 'eye' symbol, and who knows what you call the box with three horizontal lines in it? I still don't.) Then I found and searched this forum for my problem and I found the question I was asking sitting there unanswered. So I chimed in.

This is a help forum. You think you offered help, saying in so many words you were teaching me to fish. But you weren't - you were merely telling me I ought to learn to fish. I hope I didn't waste too much of your day.

Thanks for the link. I can see the problem, but I can't fix it. These files are untouchable in C1 but fully accessible in LR and Photoshop. I tried changing the file properties in Windows Explorer by opening all permissions for all users and it doesn't seem to change anything in C1. How do I get edit permission in C1?

This is not a huge problem, just an annoying one. It only affects a small percentage of the few images I have stolen from the internet. All my own stuff is fine.

    Charles

PS: what is the name of that box with horizontal lines in it?

    "Thumbnail icon" comes to mind.

In the mean time, I discovered you use a Capture One for Sony version. As I hinted to in my previous post, some images may not be editable in the limited versions (only Capture One Pro is 'unlimited').

Maybe the image with a thumbnail with an eye is not a Sony raw file. Note that a Sony raw file converted to DNG is not considered a Sony raw in the sense that you can edit it with the 'for Sony' versions of Capture One.

The square with the three horizontal lines is related to the issue you have. It means that the image is edited.

Paul - the 'restricted' images are jpegs from the internet. I know the Sony version of C08 won't open RAW files from non-Sony cameras, but it seems odd that it has a problem with anonymous jpegs.

As far as that square symbol goes, I don't think it means "edited" (past tense) because most have not been edited. I captured them from a folder without sidecars so as far as C08 is concerned, they are right out of the camera. Perhaps "editable", to use a clumsy word?

Regarding JPEG, export a raw file to JPEG and open or import it with CO8 to see whether it is editable.

Regarding 'edited' or 'editable', please note that some editing can have taken place (lens correction comes to mind) without user interaction. An image that is not edited, by user or program, should not show the symbol. Not that the symbol is the same as for the adjustments clipboard. When you give the copy command (Ctrl+Shift+C) you can look at the adjustments clipboard to see what adjustments have been done.
