MacPro Display Cards ... What's the best way?
Hi everyone,
I have a new to me (refurb Apple Store) 2009 8 core with SSD start up, 20 gig ram, Raid 0 capture & 10,000 rpm backups. The whole rig seems just as fast as my i7 2 core Laptop. I'm not happy.
So what else to do? I wonder about the display card?
I run two 23" Cinemas off the GT120 card now. The net seems to think the GT120 is a dog so what is better in your experience?
The doc on here said the NVidia GeForce GTX 285 is the best choice, so is this true? How about the 5770 or the 5880?
Mostly I feel my previews are slow ( no faster than the i7) so I was looking for the slow down, or am I just looking for something unrealistic?
Will C1 even use the Ram & stuff off a better display card or am I just squirting more money at this box?
Thanks in Advance,
Steve

Hi Steve,
If you want to discuss and solve performance issues, and whether a hardware purchase will improve this, I would like to advise the following.
First, try to be more specific about what is lagging behind. In terms of performance: what is the bottleneck?
Is it the redraw of previews only or are there other issues as well?
Next, let's focus on software as well. Hardware tells on half the story: version of OS X, Capture One. Have you tried different OpenCL settings and was there any difference in performance?
You refered to 'the doc here'. I assume you refer to Phase One KB1720
http://www.phaseone.com/en/search/artic ... nguageid=1
It does not give performance indicators for different cards (would be nice) but only a best performance indicator (currently GeForce GTX 285). If I read it correctly the ATI Radeon 5770 and 5880 are not yet in the list. This may change with the next CO 6 update which seems to be pending for release shortly. (viewtopic.php?p=46015#p46015)
Last, though not for graphics performance, take a look at Activity Monitor and see whether any other resource is playing with you. Not likely based on specs, but we're talking computers here, so you never know. Solving performance issues is ruling out what is not and closing in on what is the bottleneck.0 -
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the reply.
Well I'm running the most current OS 10.6.7 with C1Pro 6.1.1 in a 2009 8 core box. What else to say but I was hoping for a speed increase on set as compared to my last year's i7 MBpro hooked to a 23" CinemaHD. Switching Open CL seems to make no difference.
I really don't know what's happening under the hood but I see previews that come into full render pretty slow for an 8 core MacPro (and with small Canon 5DII files to boot!). I'm at 1000 pxl preview size and they are coming off 2 Velociraptor in a RAID 0. (thought that would be fast enough right)
Hmmmm .... I guess I was wondering if anyone uses (or knows if C1 uses the power from) a more expensive, ram fat display card.
Thanks !

Next step: your preview size is set at the default 1000px. Your 23" Cinema display has 1920 px horiz.. Choose a higher value, let generate CO 6 new preview (by removing the old previews from the Cache sub folder) and see whether this improves performance. 0
