C1V4 hangs making web contacts - deletes files from desktop!
When running C1V4 i tied to make a web contact sheet of various files, but when I did it was so slow (its slow anyway!) or so I thought! It actually had hung. I clicked to ask it to make the contact sheet again, and it complained the path wasnt valid (C:windows/all users/desktop etc) but it was valid.... When i exited all my desktop files were gone, and a system recovery only brought the file structure back not the files themselves. All types of files were affected, including some non backed up photos ( I know! I had jet lag....no excuse).
Any ideas on how to get them back, file recovery software brings up so much rubbish, and only one recovered file.
HELP!
Mike
PS I should add that it seems to have deleted ALL C1 settings files globally. All my editing work gone!!

This does not sound like anything C1 v4 can do on its own. The usual complaint is that it leaves files lying around all over the place rather than deletes them arbitrarily ...
I think we would have to know a good deal more before pinpointing the cause, but I am worried that file recovery software is not finding your lost files, which must therefore have been overwritten or corrupted in some way. in the worst case, you could have some sort of Windows file system problem in which the file losses become a cascade. Corruption of the file allocation table, sometimes but not always caused by a hardware fault, can produce problems of the kind you describe. But there are other possible causes as well.
I'm also slightly surprised that you find C1 slow. On my three year old Athlon-based machine, recently upgraded to 2 GB of RAM, the interface is as responsive as I could wish and the actual conversions are faster than with other conversion software running on the same machine. The minimum RAM needed to run C1 is 768K (I'd say 1 GB, especially if you are running Vista), and that you must have at least 1GB of free hard disk space (and better if the disk is defragmented); with older machines (especially if they are running a lot of software and services in the background), these conditions may not be met.
If your hardware is up to specification and you are sure that only files touched by C1 are affected, I'd back up anything you might want to put through C1 in future, then uninstall and reinstall the program before trying to use it again. Try to clear out any residual traces between the uninstall and the reinstall.
If you are not sure what is happening and suspect the worst, use some disk management software (Paragon Partition Manager or the like), preferably from a bootable CD ROM or DVD, to make a full copy of your hard drive on a new drive (which will be a lot cheaper than any more lost data). If you feel up to it, you can then use the disk management tools to check and repair your FAT. If this is outside your comfort zone, get someone who knows what they're doing to do it for you.
I'm sorry I can't be more specific (or more positive) than this.0 -
BTW I run a fast enough machine with 2GB ram and a 500GB raided backup data drive with XP on a seperate 250GB drive. I am sure I have no viruses, and that it was the hang/crash that caused this, due to the large volume of files I was asking it to process.

Your support case has been received , a work-around of system restore was suggested. Your case also has been forwarded to our software testing department for additional verification. You will be notified via support case for further advisement.
Kind regards-

Thanks for the quick support reply!
It seems I was right, they managed to replicate it...
I had already tried two restore points, they restore the file structure (folders and sub folders) but not any files themselves.

It seems I was wrong about this one. Sorry about that.
But it also makes one wonder: what kind of programming produces this kind of error, and then lets it out into the wild? It must be something like a massive resource leak that eventually crashes some or all of the system. That's the kind of thing you can use professional programming tools to detect.
Ah, well. I think I stick to small batches until the next release. The trouble is that, unlike all those angry v3.x users who post to this forum, I actually like the software.

Don't get me wrong I like the software too! I am very pleased that they had the guts to admit it is a fault, plenty of people wouldnt, they would say its my fault and then fix it anyway. They have been responsive to my replies too. But at such cost to me! I am going to have to shoot a weeks work again, and re-edit all my C1 files at some point.
I tried rescue software, but the problem with big hard drives and being busy means that it recovered 11,000+ images (none of them are the ones I lost through this crash!) to check through!

Dear Mikeinlondon,
I had this problem also, wiped out the desktop, I never got anything back.
