Why does the "Levels" tool not work while on the adjustment layer but will work on the background layer?

In the adjustments layers a limited (but expanding) set of tools is available.

I have a further Question to the Layers tool.
When I use a layer and "leave the image" with out going back to the background layer, I notice the image will not be processed.
Is there a way of marking all images and making sure that they are on the background layer with one command?
Especially useful if working fast on a lot of images, one does forget to go back to the background image from time to time...

This should not be required. An image with adjustments layers should process independent on the selected layer. Are you on CO 6.2.1?

Note that CO6 always defaults to the background layer selected when started.

    thankyou!
I did check that on my desktop mac, and it did work. (Strange)
Could there be an issuse with my mac book pro, after working there on the images the whole programe crashed as it was bach moving the unwanted pictures into the trash. Upon re-opening all "corrections" were lost. A waste of time.

May I suggest a "repair permissions" with disk utility ?
It happens from time to time that the folder containing files is right protected…
