Failure of v.5 to pass on IPTC data

Are you using an activated copy of C1 Pro v5 for Windows? I have only been able to test with it in trial mode.

Support say it works OK for them and I wondered if it was an issue with the trial version not enabling properly the full C1 Pro capability.

    Hi Martin,

I am using a full registered version of C1 Pro 5.
If they say it is working on their side, that would give some hope. Let's hope someone from PhaseOne is listening here.

    Thanks, Willem Jan.

I'm using the full registered v5 version as well. This is a big hindrance in my workflow and requires me to do a work around by reapplying the metadata after the files have been processed.

@ PhaseOne: PLEASE FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY!!!! I simply want the metadata to be passed through. I do not need the ability to edit the metadata within C1.

    First the good news:

Version 5.0.1 now appears to work like 4.8.3.

Load metadata picks up the IPTC data and passes it through - the first time.

But the Bad News like Version 4.8.3 it does not seem to pick up changes. I have not done a full test but initial signs are not good.

However if the IPTC data is modified in the RAW file after C1 has created its cache it does not appear to pick up the changes. Even though C1 pro shows the change after a Load metadata it still does not copy those changes, it uses the original IPTC. I have no intention of testing whether changes made in C1 Pro as I consider IPTC editing in C1 unusable. There are better tools and in any case I want to apply the changes to the master RAW record.

I now have three days to evaluate v5.0.1 before my Trial will run out.

Made another test; modification made in C1 seem to pass through (who is going to edit a multi line caption through the C1 slit, it is not even a letter box). But the big catch is that change then takes precedence over load metadata for that field so no external changes can be picked up (at least for that field).

We need a way of switching OFF the C1 pro metadata "editor" (it is nothing of the sort) and forcing it to use the data in the RAW file. Who actually uses it?

I am still not at all happy as the IPTC process is still really NOT FULLY FUNCTIONAL.

Hey, that is good news! Just installed 5.0.1, and guess what, it transfers GPS data, as well as keywords, caption etc.! I know, it is strange to be excited about this, as one would not expect this to be a problem in the first place, but anyway, good that it has been corrected so swiftly.
Only strange thing is that from the information in the 'Category' field, only the first three letters transfer, so my 'Architecture' pictures are now labelled as 'Arc', but can live with that.
Haven't tried to alter any metadata yet in C1, but as others have mentioned, there are much better applications for handling metadata, such as Photomechanic. IPTC data handling remains a weak point for C1.

Would you try externally changing the IPTC data in a RAW image that you have already processed in C1 v5.0.1 from the same folder.Does C1 then pick up the change and pass it through? You might need to do a load metadata.

If it does not then you have to FULLY caption and keyword before even viewing the files in C1Pro.

For me no external IPTC editing is picked up after the image has been seen by C1 Pro.

After recent correspondence with support it sounds as though PhaseOne might really be taking metadata seriously and putting effort behind getting it working effectively.

For once I am hopeful that will be fully sorted sooner rather later.

    Hi Martin,
You are right, it doesn't copy all metadata after they have been edited outside of C1.....but it does some. Keywords seem to go through well, as it does 'City'. However it does not do caption or copyright.
In addition, rating information is not read at all, after it has made it's *.cos file. Only deleting (and loosing any adjustments) allows it to re-read rating info.
So in summary, externally edited metadata:
    - sometimes cannot be read
    - sometimes can be read but not passed through
    - sometimes can be read and passed through

Well, I would say there is work to be done by PhaseOne.

    Willem Jan.
