There are a fantastic number of GPU accelerated features in the new Adobe Photoshop CS6. Here are two great examples of the incredible levels of performance that have resulted from the collaboration with Adobe to optimize for Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), AMD Radeonâ„¢ Graphics, and AMD FireProâ„¢ Professional Graphics through the industry standard OpenCL and OpenGL API

    - if you turn off the mask view, you'll notice increased performance when painting

Is the video card used for the operations you state?

I thought that it was not used on preview displaying and with local adjustments.

By preview I refer to the delay when choosing a thumbnail and seeing it click into focus as the working image. My stored previews are at 1440, less than the default and take about .2to .5 second commonly to "sharpen up". I don't see this listed as a non opencl process. But yes you are right-- local adjustments are not processed via the gpu will not affect the brush use in capture one. However I find image processing is slower in c7 than c6 so maybe a better suited card would help this.

I do use cs6 so if you are right Bob then the new radeon GCN chips might be a good choice if they work for C1

What I really am asking has anyone used any of the new cards and noticed significant improvement in C1 v7 and in what areas.

There have been quite some posts that opencl doesn't make the preview appear faster.

I notice that almost everyone posting on this topic has an Nvidia card. How many folks have AMD cards, and how well do they work?

Preview does not get rendered faster with OpenCL, as this happens on the CPU only. Same goes for what you've called "sharpen up".

Regarding ATI cards; the hd 79xx series works just as well as the Nvidia ones. Informal test in-house showed that HD 7950 is actually 1,5 times faster at processing a rawfile than the more expensive GTX 680.

Unfortunately we don't have the possibility to test (nor resources to invest in) all graphics card on the market, so I can't comment on a general ATI-vs-Nvidia trend. However, I hope this helps you a bit in your search.

I recently installed a new AMD Radeon 7770 card so I had OpenCL and don't have any significant delay in display or brush operations. I'm running an i7 @ 3.6 Gb but will shortly install a new MB and an AMD 8350CPU. I don't expect any major improvements using the same card it's just that my present ASRock MB is failing again (poor quality Caps).

Thanks guys - i'm just doing my research and checking there aren't any graphics issues (glitches, bugs etc) with specific manufacturers before i put out any cash on this. And also making sure that its a worthwhile upgrade.

I would comment that there is a shortage of good information of what kind of speed-up a graphics cards will give, and in which parts of the software. Some benchmarks from the Phase One team showing what we can expect to see would be really valuable i think. Nothing comprehensive, just a small selection of onboard, low and mid range cards that i'm sure you guys have in the office anyway.

Christian - i think the latest generation of AMD cards have a significant performance advantage in OpenCL, which probably explains your findings vis a vis the 7950 and GTX680.

Glad to hear it helped on your performance!
