Deleting Files?

With referenced images, when you remove an image from the catalog, you should get a dialog that let you decide whether you want to remove the reference only or move the image to trash as well.

The latter option deletes the image from Finder too. And IIRC that is the default option.

But maybe you have imported the images as fully managed, not referenced. Then it is a different story.

    Thank you Paul,
I am actually talking about referenced images, keeping the originals in existing folders on the HD and not fully managed inside the C1 Catalog.
However, when I try to delete the images from C1, the menu shows as active only the command "Remove from Album", while "Delete permanently" is greyed and not selectable.
After the removal, I cannot choose "Empty Catalog Trash" either (on the same menu), greyed and not selectable as well, meaning that the original files are still in the HD original folder and I have to go and delete them manually one by one.
    Where I am getting wrong?
    Thank you,
    Marco

    Marco,

Another crucial factor when deleting images in from a catalog, which I had not yet mentioned, is that the effect of the action is determined by the collection you selected.

When you have selected an Album, you will remove the image from that Album only. This is by design.
When you have selected a Smart Album or any other collection, the image will be removed from the catalog.

On Mac, referenced images are not placed in the Catalog Trash (on Win they are, the last time I checked).

Warning: do not delete images from the Finder as long as they are referenced in the catalog. They will be referenced offline, although I think offline images can be deleted (but I am not sure, have to try).

    Dear Paul,
What you are writing makes me understand that there is definitely something I don't get with Capture One...

The photos I want to delete completely from my HD are referenced in Capture One within an Album, which is contained in a Group in the root directory.

If I select the Album, I can see the photos and can choose the ones I want to "Remove from Album", but, as said, I cannot choose any "Delete permanently" nor "Empty Catalog Trash" because those commands are greyed and not active.

If I select the Group, which contains the Album with some of the photos to delete, I cannot see any photo on the viewer (it seems C1 is able to show only the photos contained in the 1st hierarchic level under) therefore I cannot delete nor remove from finder anything not visible.

I hope this makes sense with you, because for me is quit weird and I am starting to become a bit frustrated by this complicate issue for a very simple matter...

Thank you very much for your constant and professional support!

    Dear Marco,

I am sure you are not alone in learning the Capture One catalog. Regarding images in collections, you could see it this way:

After import, an image is part of the catalog and can be found in the Catalog Collections (All Images, Recent Imports, Recent Captures for tethering) and the Folders section. In addition you can place it in a User Collection (Albums, Smart Albums, optionally organized into Groups and Projects). Albums contain additional links to images in the catalog.

Like you can add an image to one or more Albums, you can remove it from the any Album too without removing the image from the catalog. You just remove the link in that album to the image.

When you like to remove the image from the catalog entirely, go to either a Capture Collection or to a folder in the Folders section and remove it from there. The delete options will adapt to the selected collection/folder (Remove from Catalog). Optional Album links are automatically removed.

    Dear Paul,

Your help has been successful! I can delete files from my HD directly from Capture One (it was essential for me!) and your explanation clarified how the software work.

    Thank you very much!

When I delete images stored in the catalog, all the adjustements (~/Adjustements/LAM/...) and previews (~/Cache/Previews/...) created for this images are still presents in the *.cocatalog file.

The catalog become bigger and bigger, even if images are deleted.

Is there any solution to optimize the catalog?

    @ Gr4phIt,

It's the same for referenced catalogs. And it's confirmed by P1. You can find more about it under my post 'Catalog size after removing images' (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=15687).

    Best regards,

Thanks Hans-B but I have already opened a ticket for this issue one year ago... Expecting you will have more chance 😄
Are you interested about my home-made python cleaning script?

They may have twice as many tickets on this now! 😄

When I saw your post here, I noticed that it is a little older. But hey, you are still watching it!

I was already thinking about scripting this. I know what I would do, but I don't know how to do it with python.
It would be great if I could have your script! How can I get it?

    Edit/Update:
I've spent a bit of my afternoon on learning about python and writing that script. It's done (thanks to stackoverflow for some code snippets), yet without removing LCCs (is it necessary to check for them?). But it cleans up my test catalog nicely.

Version 8 now cleans up it's catalogs. So I updated my post 'Catalog size after removing images' (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=15687).

    Best regards,
    Hans-B.
