UPDATED: No thumbnail photos in OS X finder
Trying out Capture One, but having one problem. When I process jpegs from my raw files and store them in a file on my desktop...and go into that file to view the jpegs...they are all there, but finder isn't making thumbnails for them. What I get instead is just the generic "Jpeg" graphic... Any fix for this? Makes editing a total pain.

There is an option whether Capture One creates a thumbnail. It is switched on by default, by you'd better check.
Output tool tab > select your process recipe
In your process recipe > File tab > File Icon checkbox.
If you created the JPEG with the Export > Variants feature, you won't find that checkbox or that option. It is ON by default (according to my experience).0 -
Thanks, Paul. Yeah, the thumbnail option is on, but no thumbnails. Odd. This doesn't happen on my Mac Pro, on my Macbook Pro Retina... 0 -
So, what happens when you move a JPEG from your Mac Pro to your MBP retina and vice versa? Does the problem goes with the JPEG or does it stay with the system? 0 -
When I move a jpeg from the Mac Pro to the Macbbook Pro...the thumbnail remains visible. So...it's something that Capture One is doing on the Macbook Pro... When I go the other way, no thumbnail jpeg from Macbook Pro to Mac Pro...still no thumbnail, which makes sense since it's the program generating it... 0 -
Can you move the process recipe from the Mac Pro to the MacBook Pro and use that for comparison? Or is that too much a hassle?
By the way, are you using the same version of CO7 on both machines?0 -
Same version... I'll try moving the process recipe files...would you happen to know where they are located?
Thanks so much for all your help....0 -

"Un" hid hidden files on both computers, moved the recipe from Mac Pro to Macbook Pro Retina...recipe worked fine on Mac Pro, but...no thumbnails on Macbook Pro Retina...
But...on a whim, I unchecked File Icon Create Thumbnails on Save...and shazam...thumbnails!
Go figure.0 -

… same for me (MB Retina, OS X 10.8.2, C1 7.0.1), the "create thumbnails" checkbox only generates thumbnails when Unchecked…
best,

I suggest that you retina users create a support case to report. 0 -
I can also confirm this. Thumbnails for JPG files are visible in the finder ONLY when "generate thumbnails" was UNCHECKED! 0 -
+1
Still a problem in 7.12

It seems Thomas (nz_doun) created a support case to illustrate this issue to us.
We can see from what he provided to us that what you are seeing when the "Create Thumbnails on Save" is UNCHECKED is not the thumbnail of the file, as none exists in the file. The white border around the thumbnail indicates that it is an Apple Generated Preview (controlled by Finder View Options) and not related to Capture One.
Why the thumbnail does not display when you enable the "Create Thumbnails on Save" is still unknown and only present on specific machines as it does not occur on all users systems. As the resulting files have a thumbnail inside, it is likely attributed to the Finder or Quicklook.
We'd be happy to investigate this further for anyone interested in creating a support case.0 -
Hi there,
I just went through the exercise and reported this bug. What a disappointment besides the waste of time!
The (very friendly) support person declared straight away that this is a problem with apple / and or my configuration / lack of knowledge. Reading their replies got me smiling a couple of times on how they made assumptions about my level of computer literacy.
The fact that this happens only with C1P and that all my other applications behave as they should (PS CS6; Aperture etc.) did not convince P1 support. I made reference to this forum entry and a similar one on DPReview. But I guess we must be all wrong. 😊
I am not sure where from the support person got the "If you are not familiar with your system as you have indicated". 😊 I have created two recipes, one with the feature turned on and one with the feature turned off and created the files at the same time from one source raw file with the result that the icon was present in the image from the recipe where create icon was turned off and vice versa. How that set-up would fit into P1 support explanations beats me. The support person does not realise that icon preview and quick-look are two completely different things.
To say the least; I find this experience very disappointing.

Here is their final reply:
Thomas,
I am truely sorry if I have not been clear in this regard but the screenshots you have just provided further illustrate what I have mentioned several times regarding Apple and how they display Previews as well as use Thumbnails. If you are not familiar with your system as you have indicated I would strongly suggest that you contact Apple as there is no error in Capture One regarding this feature.
Regarding your screenshots;
'File Icon - Off.jpeg"
- Notice that the Preview of the image (not a thumbnail but Apple's 'Preview') has a white border around it. This clearly indicates that Apple has built the Preview and is displaying it as per the setting you have on in your Finder>View>Show View Options. In this Finder Option you have the APPLE SETTING of "Show Icon Preview" turned on. Again, no thumbnail is in the file as per the instruction you gave Capture One but instead APPLE is creating this preview for you. Please understand that we do not control this feature of your Apple computer.
"File Icon - On.jpeg"
- Notice the file size of your image and it should be a clear indication that there is a thumbnail within the file. Again, the reason that you do NOT see that that thumbnail is due to a setting on YOUR computer. We have clearly included a thumbnail in the file and the ability to display that preview is controlled by the system the file is seen on, the ability to display the thumbnail is not something controlled by Capture One. The reason why YOUR apple computer does not display this thumbnail is something that you should investigate as, on a properly working system, the thumbnail of the file will be displayed (I'd be happy to show you on my system if you'd like). The most common cause for this is a corrupt or third party plugin for Quicklook. These can be found in your Library>Quicklook or System>Library>Quicklook.
Perhaps you have a non Apple Quicklook Plugin that is interferring with the thumbnail display?
Perhaps the Apple Quicklook Plugin for JPEG files is broken?
Perhaps the User Account that you are using has some issues with a system association to the Quicklook bundles?
Perhaps Finder has a corrupt Preference file?
As I am not an official Apple technician, I cannot provide you with a solution for your failing OS as to why your Finder is not properly working. This is best left to Apple.
I can suggest, as a possible step towards a solution, you create a New User Admin account on your system and log into that account. If viewing the files then shows you the Thumbnail you can begin investigating the error on a user level within your system. The link below may help you in troubleshooting your system;

Again, I am sorry if I was not explicit in outlining the features and limitations of your Apple OS but my area of expertise is in regard to Phase One hardware and software.
Kind Regards,

We do and I do, although they are not as separate as you may think. We were simply trying to help illustrate the potential causes for the conflict.
To be completely fair the supporter even went so far as to offer personalize support through a screen share to help YOU find the error in your system.
I am sorry you are disappointed Thomas. We tried to offer assistance and explain what you have shown us, we further continue to offer free support to assist you. Almost all of which (once documentation was exchanged) was done within 24 hours.
It is truly frustrating from a Customer Service standpoint to see an employee work diligently and thoroughly to help a customer, going above and beyond with offers that even Apple won't supply (all at zero cost to you) only to have it be dismissed this way in a public forum and without a single suggestion pursued.
The offer for further assistance is still on the table if you would wish to pursue it.
Until that time we'll close this thread and update when we have a more conclusive answer for users as to what is causing this error on certain systems.0 -
Update;
It would appear that this only effects Apple Retina systems as the Finder and Quicklook features operate differently than Non-Retina displays. As such, certain default resources to the OS are not present which in turn alters the function of the embedded thumbnails.
We will continue to work with Apple to find a solution.0
