Media Pro 1 Mac: Will we get manufacturer rendering back?

    This is a complicated issue made more complex by the fact that there are at least 3 vastly different OS's in the bunch. My issue is with 64 bit Windows 7.

    Nikon has a WIC codec for Windows boxes, but it is only for 32 bit systems. Nikon has not chosen to make a 64 bit version available. FastPictureViewer makes a 64 bit WIC codec that works but I have not tested it to see if it accurately displays edits in NX/NX2. It does allow for the creation of thumbnails and images in Media Pro.

    Capture One and Media Pro do not support rendering or editing of non-native NEF's. So all you out there with slide scanners etc, that use Capture NX/NX2 are out of luck with Capture One and with Media Pro unless you purchase the FastPictureViewer WIC.

    It's a bit disappointing to lose as much functionality on a software upgrade as we did. I was not smart enough to test Media Pro prior to purchasing. I had to buy a copy of the FastPictureViewer codec to recover functionality that to me was mandatory.

    I discussed the issue at length with support. No indication was forthcoming whether the lost functionality was going to be provided in the future. Honestly, this is no better than the level of communication we used to get from Microsoft, which was almost none. Actually when Anita was around the forum she would at least try to help.

    Here's hoping things get better. The one thing I know is Phase One won't get another dime of my money before I do extensive tests of any future "upgrades".

    Hi Chris;

    It works well for me. Just make sure you have "Windows Imaging Component" selected in the Media Rendering Preferences and don't forget to rebuild the items. (I also have it set to use the embeded preview, I have not tried it without it.)

    I made the mistake of getting an "Upgrade" to my EM2 (which was an "Upgrade" to IView3) before reading this thread.

    I use Capture NX on a Mac and I can see the MP shows the thumbs as they come out of Capture NX but as soon as I open, the main image turns into some nasty rendering and throws everything I have done in Capture NX away.

    This is a major deal breaker.

    BTW, I was wondering about IView 3, released seven or so years ago. Is there any other piece of software that has, since release, been progressively been made worse with each new iteration?

    It gets better. IView and EM used to be able to render NEFs created in NX from jpegs etc. A big deal in my workflow. MP no longer can.

    Seriously. Is there any other tool where users progressively lose capability with each iteration?

    I've had the same problems - actually, running the older microsoft version in media tab versus the new version from PhaseOne shows up that the new rendering takes 4-5 seconds - even for JPGs !!!!

    I will be asking for my money back - after 10 years it's back to the MS version and a hopeful wait for an alternate program that handles 75k images well.
