Import to Catalgue from Canon5d MK II
Dear Folks,
I'm struggling to find any information about how to import my photos from a Canon 5d MK II camera directly into the Capture One Pro catalogue.
I did some google research and didn't find any useful info. Tethering works perfectly with this camera, but I just cannot figure out, how to directly import my photos via USB-cable.
Any ideas my friends ?

I had this camera, and I imported the pictures via a card reader, not directly from the camera itself. 0 -
You'll find that generally Capture One thinks that you are tethering if you connect the camera with a cable, and therefore you can't import images directly into Capture One that way. You can either use a card reader as tenmangu81 says, or if you want to use the cable you can transfer the images to the computer (using Finder, Image Capture, etc) then import them into Capture One from the computer. I think the card reader is the easiest.

I use Image Capture to transfer pictures to my Import folder for C1 direct from camera. I guess it depends whether you want to risk the CF slot in the 5D or the USB connector. I think it is easier to bend pins in the CF slot. 0 -
Generally a card reader will be a lot faster than using the camera connection although more recent cameras are possibly not so bad if they have USB3 connectivity. Plus you are not using the camera battery to do thing other than take photos.
The only time I have had a problem with a pin on a camera CF fitting was with an older camera and CF spec which was bought used and may have had the problem when purchased. Easily fixed and even though the card was quite a loose fit (later cameras have been much better) I never had the problem again.
That said the bodies I mainly use now both take SD cards. Although one of them also uses CF I tend not to bother with that any more on most shoots and simply use my notebook SD card slot for fast imports.
I do appreciate that with the 5D2 you have only the CF slot option and at least it is USB2 rather than USB1. I think a good quality external USB3 reader would be a faster option but whether that make a difference for you depends in how many images you are importing in a single pass. A card full would make a difference. 10 or 20 would probably not make a difference.
Your basic option is to connect the camera to the computer as a mass storage device (with the CF card installed of course) and download that way. Then import the downloaded files. A 2 step process and a bit longer but then you can just copy the download directory to an archive for backup purposes.
Using the session concept I can copy from the card directly into a folder in a pre-created Session folder structure but that's not really the same as importing which has additional features available. However C1 will recognise the files and create initial edit settings, thumbnails and previews. However my 1D3 file copy using USB2 (on a USB3 port) was not exactly speedy. I was begging to wonder if it was working at all. 5D2 files would normally be much larger although that is not necessarily an indication of proportionately longer copy times.
I don't know whether that would work for a catalogue requirement and in any case there is little to be gained by doing this compared with simply downloading outside C1 and then importing from the download folder.

How can I do that? My Canon 5d MKII / or the CF card will never show up as mass storage device.0 -

I'm a Windows user so cannot help with Mac settings but with Windows just connecting my Canon cameras and switching them on will recognise them as mass storage devices and suggest some actions that I might like to take, including full file copying functions.
I think Mac can do the same if settings allow it.

Same on Mac. As soon as you connect your camera and switch it ON, you may be able to see it as a mass storage device on your desktop. Then you can do what you like.... Try it before launching C1. 0 -

Unfortunately not with a Canon 5 MK II on a Mac. It won't show up :/0 -

❗️ 🤓 7 years ago, I had an iMac 21" together with a Canon 5DII, and it worked perfectly.0 -

Use the standard app (available on every mac) "image capture" to import directly from camera to disk.
Works for me.0
