Can you be more specific on the NEF files (from which Nikon; did they work on earlier versions of CO7; are they touched by other software like Capture NX?)

I never tried them on a previous version of C1. I've never owned a Nikon camera before. I've only ever dealt with CR2 files in the past and of course the occasional IIQ from somebody else's equipment. The NEF files are straight out of the camera.

Are you using a "Tethered" session (sound like it if the session has a Capture folder) or Untethered?

Have you actually tethered the Nikon camera? What you wrote suggests not but it's worth getting clarification on that in case it is relevant.

There are different types of NEF files - 12bit and 14bit iirc. The choice can be set in camera. Which type are these files? Also which camera?

Not tethered. I am copying the files from the card into the capture folder. This is per the recommendations given at Phase One training. I create all sessions as tethered and thus there is always a capture folder. Even when not shooting tethered, I am told by the trainers that it is easier to work that way and dump the files that you import into the capture folder.

I have never used a NEF file before, never owned a Nikon camera. How does one figure out what kind of file it is? This is from a Nikon 1.

Thanks for trying to help. I really appreciate it.

Which model of Nikon 1? There seem to be several.

Indeed that was the problem. Turns out that not all Nikon 1 cameras are supported. I am an idiot. Sorry.

From what I can remember of the available list vs the release notes vs what Nikon list as available on their web site the one I can see is missing is the J4 - which I assume is the latest one (I am not at all familiar with the Nikon range).

Presumably there will be enough demand foreseen to do something about support in the near future.

I'm sure the camera manufacturers could make things simpler for everyone .... but then that may not be in their longer term interests. 😉

I have been using C1Pro 7 for quite some time......I recently purchased a Nikon D810 (still have my D300). Having problems importing .NEF files. Can't see the files, which I place in a folder on my desktop and from which I import into C1Pro 7. .NEF files from my 300 works correctly, but not from the D810......any help/guidance will be greatly appreciated.....

RAW files like NEF files contain data that are used via interpretation to present images we understand. However the manufacturer's RAW file structure, even when it is shared between cameras from the manufacturer, only represents a storage structure - the data provided by the sensor and the needs for interpreting it can and often does require different interpretational data to give results. More specifically to give good and high quality results. Traditionally each camera needs to be checked, measured and tested in a controlled Laboratory to have a chance of being sure to produce those results. Sometimes the files form 2 or more different models are indeed identical for all practical purposes but often they are not. Sometimes there are huge differences. Sometimes small rather subtle differences.

It takes a while to obtain new hardware after release and then go through the hardware testing, software testing and release process to make the appropriate interpretation values available. As far as I am aware the D810 does not yet have dedicated support so C1 will not "see" the files. I think you can expect to see this change reasonably soon, it being a Nikon camera, but phase do not pre-announce so you may need to wait a while longer and perhaps turn to the Nikon software on a temporary basis to convert the raw files to something that Capture One will be happy to work with. A TIFF file for example.

    HTH.

NEF files from the Nikon D810 are not supported with C1 Pro version 7.2.3. Plenty of users including me are currently waiting for an update.

Many thanks for confirmation that C1Pro 7 does not yet support .NEF from the D810. Will follow your recommendation as a "stop-gap". Thank you.

    See my workaround:

    Works fine with D810 files.

Should work with Nikon 1 cameras, worth a try.

    Hi Fred,

Yes, your workaround is able to read the D810 files but also changes the pixels (removes a few pixels from the long edge and adds a few pixels at the short edge). At least this is my observation with my NEF files and that's why I stopped using this solution.
