Examine entire folder tree in Session Favorites?
I'm testing the trial version of C1, as a long time Lightroom user, and I'm trying to get familiar with the DAM features of C1... Are they really as under-featured as they seem?
From Lightroom, I have a folder structure based on the date of the shoot. Something like this;
2011-.
|- 2011-01
|- 2011-02
etc..
|- 2011-08-.
|- 2011-08-01
|- 2011-08-02
|- 2011-08-03
|- 2011-08-04
etc...
First off, there seems to be no way to replicate this sort of logical folder structure when importing with C1 - if there is, how do I do it?
Second, what I want to do is easily manage images over a broad period of time. I know I can get access to all of my files just fine using the system folders, but unfortunately the smart albums can't seem to see anything there. I have to add a folder to the 'session favorites' to make that work, correct? The problem is that if I add a folder that only contains folders, like my "2011" folder originally created with lightroom, all the child folders are ignored. Worse yet, all the child folders are ignored in the "smart albums" as well! So I have to manually go through and add every individual day of shooting to the session favorites. What a hassle if I want any broad period, keyword based, smart albums.
A practical example would be the trip I am on now. I've been traveling for 2 1/2 months and lacking time for full edits, so only narrowing down images more generally and keywording images. So now I have a few thousand images, all keyworded "Greece" - I would love to have a "Greece" an and =>1-star smart album that automatically separates those images from the rest of the year, then a series of smart sub-albums that separate "abstraction" "architecture" "model" "street" etc... and then more specific sub albums. i.e. Under model, I would create an album for the name of the individual models, and it sorts more specifically. This way, when I return home, I can easily work through a large number of images in a more organized fashion, and also return to those images at a future date, if I so chose, with minimal clicking.
All of this means that if my Lightroom catalog is ever corrupted or otherwise lost, but I still have my image files, I can ALWAYS rebuild these structures - or even change them - very easily. I'm concerned that Capture One sessions, if ever corrupted or out-of-date, will be difficult to rebuild. Also, the lack of this functionality makes it very difficult to migrate to Capture One; by contrast, migrating to Lightroom is very simple and user friendly.
How does Phase One recommend a large number of assets for a variety of projects be managed? Is this functionality reserved for Media One, or do you guys all use bridge for archiving?

No one has any insight?
I am a student, so is this really just a matter of perspective in professional vs amateur workflow and needs? Is it just more practical to break work into sessions to isolate client-to-client data? But still... what about future needs - creating website portfolios, or sorting images for consideration when putting together a gallery show seems like it would be downright obnoxious with C1's system... Thoughts?0 -
They don't reply because the users and support people are largely arrogant and they mostly have digital assistants that run around fixing problems and running studio operations. The software is for people who bought a 30,000 dollar camera, need matched image quality processing for it and don't need all the bells and whistles that Lr or Aperture have.
Its ridiculous that it doesn't see multiple folders upon import. You can only import one folder or CF card worth of images at a time. This is a deal breaker for me as I have the stackable Lexar firewire 800 CF readers (4 of them) and Lr sucks all the images in off those cards but C1Pro doesn't do this.0 -

I tried installing the Media Pro trial to see if that will fill the gap, and it seems to have great potential, but.... I have a huge problem with it; for some reason certain raw files will only display as a document icon (the little paper icon) instead of the image thumbnail, or even a high-res version when I try to view an individual image. They open fine in Capture One, but nothing I do seems to get the thumbnail to appear. Half a directory will be fine, but the other half will just be the paper icon, even after multiple attempts at rebuilding an item, syncing and/or clearing annotations.
I don't know what to do and it makes the program unusable. Any ideas what the problem is?0 -
