Further to that is that no control ( exposure/brightness or WB or anything ) seems to work on these images.
The same images imported on LR work fine.
They are D800 files imported from card

    thank you

Hmm, have you tried turning off OpenCL from Preferences under the General tab then under Hardware Acceleration? If not set both Processing and Display to 'Never' then restart C1 and see if there is a difference.

Please check that you are not running in DB mode. This mode is only for our Digital backs.

That was it.Thank you so much. What is CL for? I have a retina MacBook.... what more do I need to use it?

CL is OpenCL (open Computer Language) and is a tool to automatically use CPU and GPU (your graphic card) for processing.

    See more here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCL

C1 uses it to process previews & output data. Some older graphic cards might have some issues with it, so in case something goes wonky the first thing to try is to turn of OpenCL (via the preferences)

    Why turn off openCL?

You're on a retina MBP, just like me. An up-to date graphics card. It should work. And you are missing out on a nice speed bonus.

Have you checked what size your previews are? If it's pixelated, this sounds like a low resolution preview (just as I had in Adobe Bridge, where right after installing the image quality was bad, until I adjusted the preview generation).

I have read about this tip to turn off openCL. It seems more of an emergency thing, like chopping off an arm that has been bitten by a poisonous snake.

There should be a better approach. Your modern MBP should work flawlessly.

On the other hand, C1 Pro 7 is so buggy, everybody seems to have different issues. I can't build a catalog, for example, while others can. But I have super quality and fast previews. 🙄
