Browser viewing problem
Let's say you want to use the filters to filter the images you are viewing in the browser. The filter tool is incredibly capable.
You start with selecting the all images collection.
Then, you reduce the number of images you are viewing with filter criteria. But, the filter criteria pane needs a lot of room. But the collections pane takes a lot of room. As soon as you minimize the collections tool by clicking on the down arrow, the choice of "all images" is lost. Why? No reason I can see for the behavior.
Two work arounds:
1. Hide tools. Open a floating tool for the filters. Not bad. Except the floating tool covers images. Hmmm. How about resizing the main catalog window. No can do. It's gets "stuck" at a certain minimum width and there is nothing you can do about it. Another huh?
2. Create a new tab or add filters to another tab: metadata is an obvious choice. Just switch to the tab. Problem solved.
Note that the collections tool is not visible but "all images" is still active. Hah! So, it could be done...
Just some stuff that is a nuisance and not so well thought through. Work around 2 is a completely acceptable solution, but why? it' s extra stuff to do. If C1 wants to take on Lightroom (and be different! I am not trying to get C1 to be Aperture (never even used it) or LR) then lots more stuff needs to "just work". Or maybe that's not a goal and that's ok, too. The hard to use reputation could be cured with some incremental ui refinement. The fundamentals are strong in C1.
