    Loosing USB connectivity can have several causes, extension is one of them. From the USB.org web site:
    In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).

    You might want to look in System Profiler to see whether there is still a connection alive after cable extension. Look under USB. Fortunately, I just made a basic checklist on tethering earlier this week. Lucky you! 😉. See:
