Black&White images
I use C1Le.
My latest camera is a Canon XT. It has a custom function that lets you shoot in black and white (B&W). RAW images thumbnails shot in B&W appear in Canon's Zoombrowser as B&W.
When i use C1 to edit these images, they appear in full color. I can look at them in B&W by using the Greyscale tab. When I process them as jpegs, they appear in color in Elements 3.
How can I process them through C1 LE as B&W images?

BobT,
It seems this function coordinates with the Canon software exclusively.
No need to use this custom function if you'll use Capture One to process your RAW images.
There are 2 ways to convert a color RAW file to a grayscale image upon processing.
At the Process Tab > at Color Management Workflow > pulldown the choices and see Convert to generic grayscale
If grayscale images are a major part of your work, you may also establish grayscale as the Destination profile under:
Workflow > Show color management settings > Output destination ( Working Space )
There you will see 2 choices of Phase One Gray Profile 1.8 and Phase One Gray Profile 2.2

I am a relative newbie to using B&W images with my XT.
It would seem to me that you are suggesting not to use the B&W function of the camera. This would leave me viewing color images on my camera's LCD.
I would then process them in C1, and at the end of this process- convert them to C1's generic greyscale.
Do you think this is the same as far as results as using Canon's approach to this?0 -
BobT,
This is acutally for You to decide.
The feature is comes from the 20D. This in-camera Black and White feature allows you to choose from 5 B&W filters and toning effect and also contrast and sharpness. All the same tools are available in Capture One.
I'm sure that Canon has done a good job of making this camera feature work well with their software.
However, just as Capture One's algorithms do a much more sophisticated job than Canon software of converting RAW files for a better resulting image, it is very likely that processing a B&W image in Capture One will do a more sophisticated job as well. The processing creates the grayscale image and your done.
The result you're after depends on what you will do with the image. If printing a large dimension, then Capture One will likely do a better job.
I suggest you test and determine for yourself what image results you like best. Afterall, this is what is important.
Sincerely,

BobT, download the generic B&W profile from Digital Outback and try their B&W workflow for Capture One. It is very powerful and the results are outstanding:
