White balance presets

Now on Day 2 of using C1 and still totally impressed - but one or two rough spots ..

Most importantly, following the steps to adjust White Balance as described in the tutorial does not work reliably. Most times it only offers "shot" or "custom" with not drop down options in custom, but every now and again the drop down options will appear.

Any/all advice welcome

    Are you editing RAW files or JPGS (or something else?)

    If RAW files you should see the options. The WB can be completely changed for a RAW file as part of the development process.

    Not so for jpgs - the initial WB is burned into the file so the presets are no longer relevant. In effect whatever you do is gong to be a custom adjustment or a "reset" to "As shot".

    Thanks for the responses.

    I use a Nikon D7100. Yes, the WB only works on NEF originals not JPEGs or TIFFs, but, as posted, inconsistently - probably about 1 in 3.

    No. It works about 1 in 3 with NEFs and (as is to be expected) not at all with jpegs or tiffs

    Are the NEFs "Straight" files, not subject to any tweaks for Nikon software or, perhaps, special camera settings?

    Just a thought. I'm not a Nikon user so have no way to check anything but it occurs to me that seeking what may or may not be different about the files that work and those that don't would be a useful starting point whether it provides an answer or fails to provide an answer.

    Good question ...

    Since Apple announced they were withdrawing support for Aperture I have been exploring replacement / work-around options (which of course is why I am here now!) and it is quite likely most were downloaded to Nikon ViewNX 2, and the rest directly to Aperture. I'd need to do a fair bit of digging to check if there is a consistent association with the non-functioning WB preset and the download workflow - but I'll see what can be done.

    It seems to be camera dependent. Anything shot with my first Nikon DSLR, a D3000, won't work. Anything with its successor a D3200, or the current kit, a D7100, is OK.

    Unfortunately when transferring my Aperture library to C1 it was in oldest first order, which explains the high proportion of fails encountered when exploring the feature for the first time.

    Since all is well with the D7100 and since the D3000 shots have already been edited to death, it's not a problem.

    Once you have touched the pictures with View NX there may occur erratically problems as you mentioned. that as well happens within nikons own software. One oft the reasons of that behaviour are differences of the usage of EXIF/DSCFS implementation. Nikon is world champion i mixing up theses data - differing from camera to camera. Some people assume, that the marketing division produces the usage of these data containers upon results of trend scouts and then name them accordingly to the results of these surveys.
