How to Name Files?
(I'm using C1 Pro 7.1.5)
When I shoot tethered I have no problems naming the files (Lastname_Firstname_4-digit-number) the way I want them:
Works perfectly.
But sometimes I shoot to the CF card and download later. I want those files to (easily) have the same naming structure as they can be from the same shoot/session. When I look at the import dialog box I don't see a way to get the same "Naming Format" (Name + Camera Counter).
Can anyone let me know if I am missing something? Can't I use the same tokens from the "Next Capture Naming" area in the import dialogue window?
Thanks for your help.

Please simply use "Job Name + Counter". 0 -
Renaming image files can be done on 4 different functions in CO7 (tether/capture, import, batch rename, output). CO7 uses tokens for this. However, the available tokens can differ per function.
The Name token is only available during Capture. The Name token is given a value in the Name field under the Format field in the Next Capture Naming tool. You already use it this way.
On import you do not have a Name token because the file already has a name on the CF card. You can use the Job Name token in the Format field and fill in the value for Job Name just below it.
One additional tip: to sync the counters of capture and import, there is an option to link these two. Go to Next Capture Naming tool, open its action menu (small triangle at the right) and make sure 'Use Import Counter' is selected.0 -
Paul...syncing that counter is an AWESOME tip. I appreciate the feedback from you and Drew.

I have the same issue and was wondering if you could simply put the "camera counter" token in the "import images">"naming" dialog box during import so It actually uses the camera's counter? Otherwise I have to use the four or five digit counter and go to the first file on the card to find what the file starts with. Also If I deleted any files from the camera while I am shooting… the numbers don't match whats on the card. There are times when I am shooting to the laptop then untether, shoot to the card and need the ability to import from the card to my desktop computer.
I use Lightroom to import my files then have to open C1 to work on them. I would LOVE to not have to import through LR and import through C17 ONLY.
BTW, the format I use for all of my imported files are MM.YY.#####.IIQ
Can you just add a Token on the next update or is there a way I can add the token to the import dialog box?0 -
Hi Mobyfoto,
Regarding the camera counter token, it is my understanding that there is not camera counter when tethering. The file name is created when stored. When you shoot to memory card, the camera comes up with a file name. When you tether, the computer/Capture One does.
I like to refer to my earlier post in this thread regarding syncing the import and tether counter. This was designed in scenarios as you describe, where tethering and shooting to card appear in the same shoot.0 -
Paul, if I may ask:
I used to import my images using Photo Mechanis, but after I have started using C1 it makes more sense to me to do it all in C1.
However when importing the images if I choose to rename the images like I use to year/month/date_counter for instance 20140525_0001 C1 renames the images in random order which really screw things up when you are shooting with a tech cam with LCC's you have to match to the right images.
If I choose to not rename the images everything is in right order.
BTW; I'm exclusively importing from CF card.
Would your tip below sort this issue out?

Peter,
The tip on Import Counter sync does not apply to your situation since you exclusively shoot to card. That said, the rename issue with randomizing order is not how it should work.
Are you renaming during import are after import? Have you tried the other option (for example, after import when you rename now during import or vice versa). If you did try that, did it makes any difference?
I use Photo Mechanic myself for import from card and renaming. Hence, I do not use the rename function (that is Batch Rename) of CO7 often but have noticed it is not as robust as PM.0 -
Paul,
I'm renaming during import but am quite sure I tried the other way around which didn't make any difference.
I mainly wanted to use C1 for import to make sure all image settings got transferred but if that's also the case with PM I will just continue using that.
Thanks for your reply..

Peter,
Not sure which image setting you are referring to which should be transferred during import.0 -
Paul,

All metadata comes with the raw file. PM is not affecting this.0 -
Thanks Paul,
I will continue using PM then also for my IQ160 files 😊

I have been following this off and on over a period of time. The suggestion "One additional tip: to sync the counters of capture and import, there is an option to link these two. Go to Next Capture Naming tool, open its action menu (small triangle at the right) and make sure 'Use Import Counter' is selected." does not work for my situation. How difficult would it be to have the same "tokens" available across the various options...(tether/capture, import, batch rename, output)? There IS a Camera Counter token available during capture. The raw files have all the information for the file including Camera Counter. I shoot both Medium format and Canon raw files and need to import using the Camera-assigned counter. I need to import directly from the compact flash card. The "1-6 Digit Counter" available in the import dialog always starts at 0001 and is not editable to manually enter the file number of the camera (for ex. I can not have the 4-digit counter start with 2403, then have it add the following corresponding numbers 2405, 2406…
I do not have photo mechanix. I have to import through lightroom which will apply the camera's counter and apply my copyright metadata to the file as it imports.
I just wish that the software would allow for ME to control the import process and apply all my copyright information including phone, address company web sight etc. The only option in the metadata import box is "copyright" and "description".
I know that that is almost another subject… just sharing what I need when importing.0 -

You can do this with CO7 on import or tethering. Create a style or preset with your IPTC (metadata) stationary and apply at import/capture.0 -

You can set the counter to start with any value you like. In the Import Images dialog, Naming section, there is a small triangle at the right > Set Import Counter0 -

If you are using tethering you are bypassing the camera card. In effect your computer is the camera's memory card. This means you are also by-passing the camera generated file naming and numbering process.
If you have to make use of the camera generated file naming conventions for some reason then you need to set up the camera to delivery its files to a "hot folder" (typically in the computer) and have C1 watch for incoming files to that folder.
In effect the way this works is a result of the way the camera manufacturers have implemented the options they offer. The Software Development Kit for tethering does not offer an add-on layer of functionality between the regular camera processing function and the computer. Rather it replaces it to hand direct control to the computer and skips the camera processing activity. Therefore you do not get any numbering sequence from the camera.
HTH.

Thanks Paul, for the tip on customizing the import file number! That was successful, however, why does the folder now have a heart next to it? I don't want CO7 to assume that I need to "favorite" a folder. I figured out how to un-favorite it. How can I make sure that the next import will not have a heart/favorite. How do I turn that off? I did not see the option to NOT favorite the next import folder?
Thanks again!0 -
Making the import folder a session favorite happens automatically when you let Capture One create that folder for you on import. In other words, import into an existing folder or into a new folder you make before import.
Look in the import images dialog, under Import to, for Create subfolder... > that is the option that triggers the favorite making and can't be switched off (as far as I know).0
