forced obsolescence
Re the warning now on launch on PPC, Capture One is the first to dump support for a perfectly capable platform. I know Apple is ultimately responsible with their planned obsolescence of the G5, but all the big imaging software makers are still supporting it, and there's no question the hardware's still solid. I would urge Phase One to reconsider their intent to abandon support at this stage, we should still be getting a reliable fully supported Capture One 4 for PPC. Apple, who trumpet their "green" commitment, will also have to review their plans if they're to maintain a shred of credibility.

Hi Dave,
Having used C1 4.5 on my macbook pro with great success, I decided too just have a crazy attempt to install it on my G5 2.7 ghz in the studio. To my suprise it worked like a dream, although it does run a bit slower (not much) I find the processed files vastly improved...
This has saved me the need to go out and buy £2000 machine.
Kind regards

Depends on point of view: Hasselblad and Leaf dropped PPC support earlier than Phase One. I compare them with these companies because I think they are their prime competitors. If you are interested see my notes in this post where I elaborate on that:
I am aware that Capture One also serves the dSLR community. Third party software in that market still supports PPC as far as I can see.[quote="Dave" wrote:

Apple hardware has a long lifespan; I have some G5 PowerMacs here catching dust but found a new purpose for them because there is still state of the art color management software not fully compatible with the Intel/Leopard department. Re Apple, of course many users benefit from the faster Intel platform, in particular for notebooks. You can't have it both in the long run.[quote="Dave" wrote:

If Phase One have the resources to do that, I would love it but I am not sure whether that is a realistic scenario. Any backwards compatibility (i.e. PPC G5 support) will delay progress of CO4 development considerably and that hurts the interest of those users already working with Intel/Mac (note that it will also slow down development of the Windows cousin of CO4 as well since releases are running in parallel with Mac). Users are already waiting for new and older features to be implemented for a considered amount of time.
It is a choice Phase One makes, it is their business case. For us users, I believe their is a pro and con to it. My 2 cents.0 -
There is one way for Phase 1 to at least console some of their customers for an interim period until these people find their budget to move on to newer machines and OS.
Phase 1 can continue to support V3.7.9 and update profiles for cameras for the next 12 months. Provide a cut-off date whereby all support will STOP permanently and no further new camera profiles will be created. After that users can of course continue to use 3.7.9 if they so choose as they have paid for it. This way, R&D resources will not be heavy and yet it gives users more time to upgrade their hardware and OS. I have several machines running Mac OS 9.2 and although I had Mac OS X 10.0 a long time ago, I chose not to implement that since I had a lot of legacy software. It was only recently that I bought a Macbook Pro (2007 version) that I started using 10.5.5, partly because I wanted to use Capture Pro 4.
If this is a good idea to Phase 1 and they decide to use this route, they are welcome to send me a refurbished P30 camera kit as a token of appreciation. 😄0 -
Shame there wasn't a bit more notice, may have missed it but my Quad G5 was made obsolete by Phase one on the day of release of V4 PRO, no way to treat loyal customers.
Apple on the other hand have given around 12 months notice that Snow Leopard will not work on PPC, fair enough, the world does move on.....
The really annoying thing is that 3.7.9 STILL doesn't work with 1dsmk3 files, there is a 3 pixel line down every file, so what to do, use V3 and spend time cropping each file or use V4 on PPC and spend time waiting for the previews to load and working round all the other bugs/missing features???0 -

You might or might not got the tip already to copy a crop to all images - excluding the 3 pixel line - to each folder or session you open. Just a workaround, could save some time. You only have to create the crop once (probably one for landscape and one for portrait orientation).0 -
Paul & others,
Is there a way to group all the horizontals and verticals, i.e. sort by orientation. Right now i have two shoots with different situations. Both are frustrating because of this crop issue.
I have a folder of about 500 images with many horizontals and vertical images in no particular order.
Also i have a shoot with 65 different sub folders, each with 10 -30 images. Again horizontals and verticals mixed.
Applying a vertical or horizontal crop would be much easier if it was possible to group them by orientation.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for pointing that out, Steve. I haven't got past the slow navigation but I'll just suck it up and process something then to see what the fuss is about. I keep hearing the processed images are outstanding. Good to hear it's working on ppc's. Paul and others, yes we do get a lot of life out of these boxes, and arguably we should be getting even more as the gains with each upgrade now are pretty marginal. I still boot this thing in Classic from time to time to use one of my favorite printer drivers. Try that with a Mactel 😊
Cheers,

I hoped you won't ask. No suggestions here, sorry.0 -

Beat me to it, 800+ images some days to crop the line out of....not much fun.
I have created a support case with Phase One and there suggestion was to use V4 so I'm at a dead end unless I go out and spend £1700 on a new mac ☹️0 -
Is using CO 4.1.2/Mac on option for the time being? 0 -

Hello,
Main problem here is that it takes a significant amount of time to update Capture One 3.7.X. What takes a matter of days of weeks with Capture One 4 programming takes months in the 3.7 platform. Continued maintenence of 3.7 was a chief reason that Capture One 4 was delayed coming to the market. Yes we would love to have the means to support PPC a little while longer however we just do not have the resources to make it happen.0 -
Will the 4.56.2 work on a PPC Mac laptop 17in...Last generation with Tiger [quote="Jon211" wrote:

Not sure which version you are referring to (4.56.2, could be typo...) but regarding CO 4.5.x the combination of PPC G4 and Tiger is less likely to work successfully (my estimation). PPC G5 with Leopard does have some satisfied users here, if I read between the lines 😉 .0
