Sharing Styles and Presets eg 'Film Simulations'

There is very little discussion on this forum about technique. I think this is a shame. Maybe most users are professionals who like to keep there workings private. Maybe users have already developed their own 'styles' and are happy with them. Maybe people create their own styles from scratch for every picture or set of pictures. Maybe you are all primarily photographers and using a computer comes a distant second.... Maybe it's not worth sharing styles as they are not a one click fix but just a starting point.. . . . Maybe a combination of all of these (and other?) things.

Anyway to cut a long story short I've spent some time over the Christmas break 'computationally' converting some 'Simulated Film Curves' from the open source GIMP editor and produced some Capture One .copreset files that can be used in Capture one (well at least 6.3.2 Pro as that is what I have and some of the .copreset have RGB curve settings which I don't think you can edit on the non-pro version). I can't comment on the absolute tonal accuracy (maybe you can?) but there are some very clever GIMP users out there I've just converted the files as a bit of mental challenge and improve my understanding.

I had to do a bit of work working out the format of the .copreset XML files, but that was easy as it's just XML text and values. I then created a number of scripts to manipulate the GIMP file format and write out Capture One compatible files. It wasn't elegant, but it only had to be done once 😄

If anyone would like a copy of these files please just PM me.

If anyone has presets or techniques they'd like to share then get in touch. I'm most interested in trying to simulate the look of B&W prints from the 1940's, 50's and 60's.

    I know what you mean on lack of discussion. I am not a pro, closer to some version of an advanced amateur. I shoot a Canon 60D, mostly nature and grand kids. I don't use styles at all - but maybe I should.

    I tend to use CO for about 90% of my raw conversion, Lightroom for the others. I use LR for my very high ISO shots, as I find that its noise reduction is better than CO for noisy images. I use PS Elements for pixel editing, such cloning out objects, layers for blending, etc. I also use the Topaz plugins for advanced noise reduction, sharpening and extraction.
    If I intend to print a high iso shot, I'll take it through CO, then to PSE for final cleanup with Topaz.
    I have tried starting a few discussions on workflow here, but they have led no where.
    Most of the pro users probably don't shoot a lot of high iso photos, so your problems are different from mine.

    I'll be interested to see if you preset styles generate any discussion.

    I wonder then if most users just use CO for the raw conversion step through to PhotoShop/(LightRoom?) for all the subsequent work. Anyone care to comment?

    Clearly PhotoShop is far more capable at image manipulation but I'm not into that amount 'manipulation' for my photos.

    I'm happy with what I can do with CO Pro, I take pictures for fun, I don't have the money nor the time to start to use a combination of packages for my images. To be honest level and curve adjustments make the changes I want to make in the pictures I take, I'm not into 'fashion magazine' levels of manipulation. I've stuck my stick in the sand and gone with CO (for good or for bad) and am mostly happy with it. I like its elegant simplicity. I can see an awful lot of people that aren't happy and I can understand why, it needs a massive amount of memory nowadays, Open CL can be hit and miss with your hardware, it can crash a lot and fortunately my camera *is* supported in the current version. (I got lucky with memory, CPU and Open CL video card!)

    I have a feeling that a new version will be out soon. CO 6 has just been heavily discounted, there was a customer survey the same thing happened about a year ago when CO6 came out (at least I think it was 6, that's when I went to CO 6 Pro). When there is a new version, only the new version of the software will support new cameras so people will have to upgrade or move on; the trouble is that it takes about 6 months for a new version to become stable so we (the users) take one step forward and 3 steps back. I'd love a stable, reliable, consistent product with updates that just works, but that doesn't generate enough income for the software authors so we're into the standard software new features = new version = upgrade cost software development cycle. This wouldn't be a problem if the new version worked as well as the old version when it came out.... this can be the case, but sometimes isn't 😕

    PO have an odd position in the market, clearly they have a product aimed at their professional backs, but now it's been extended to cover lots of 'amateur' cameras there's a lot of work to do keep supporting these cameras and their users. Widening the scope of your product brings in more users and sells more product but I feel the PO is still primarily a product aimed at professionals with varying amounts of support for less 'professional' cameras. I doubt it'll ever become a 'universal' raw converter so it will always be targeted at a subset of cameras, not a problem if your camera (and your next one and the one after that) sits comfortably within the set of cameras that are supported.

    I seem to have rambled on bit and drifted off topic, sorry. I'm (we're?) supposed to be talking about technique and presets 😊

    Let's see we get any discussion on that subject...

    More and more I have changed to specialist programs instead of PS, mostly becuse there is no seamless integration between the CO nondestructive editing and PS nondestructive editing (nor between LR and PS), you still have to create an intermediate file and break the flow in two or more parts so why use an expensive jack-of-all-trades when you can get the same or better by collecting programs that only does what you want?
    For me, this means that I loose some very good plugins that I was accustomed to, like PixelGenius PhotoKit base and sharpening and the SilverOxide B&W filters.
    The thing you have done, converting the GIMP film curves to CO, has been on my mind for some time but, as usual, time is a commodity in short supply. So when I saw what you ave done, I just felt "YES!". With this, the only larger grief I have with CO is for functionality like the PG Sharpening Kit, i.e. to add sharpening on a layer (yes, you can almost. You can add more of the same thing but not change threshold or radius.) but not even this is something I feel is absolutely necessary, as clarity handles most of the creative part and I use Qimage for printing.

    For presets, I have started to experiment with them to formalize project setups, the things that are common and not applied thorough the ingester metadata support but it's a very limited use.

    How about just putting the presets in a zip file on a public folder in something like dropbox or livemesh and then sharing the link?
    I think it would be easier than people PMing you one by one.

    I could drop the zip file on a anonymous sharing site, but I prefer the 'personal touch'. It's not really much work for me to email it out and I get thank yous like this:

    "I have been playing around with these and I must say I am in love they are awesome!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing these with me, there are not very people that do as you have here. "

    Call me old fashioned, but this is far better than leaving them for anonymous download and having no idea what people think of them.

    Do you have an alternative eMail provider you could try?

    It reads like the host system for Neil's posted eMail address is checking, as most do, where the eMail is coming from - all the skips along the route. To do this they will often use a number of checklists provided by various servers around the internet intended to keep a list of potentially risky servers. Servers that at some point have been carrying, unknown to their management, bulk mail messages that have been 'reported' as virus or spam sources.

    In theory this sounds like a great idea but it deos have some weaknesses and can induce false warnings that, if accepted at face value by automated systems, can be disruptive rather than helpful.

    If the failures persist you could try contacting the host's internet management team at leeds.ac.uk (Leeds University in the UK) and advise them about the problem so they can look into it. They may be unaware there is an issue OR there may be a real issue, whether connected or unconnected to your email service provider, that you might benefit from knowing about.

    Of course you may need to use an alternative email service to get the message through ...

    I think VSCO dropped C1 as a platform. I've just resorted to using my own presets. This is the closest I can get to a film look:
