pack as EIP

That's actually very good question if there is no similar way to achieve this functionality with catalog. This opens up another important question, should you use catalog or session. This post states that catalogs are not recommended in the first place, although it seems that they are preferred general method for C1... very, very confusing ❓

It also seems that this can be done via export originals/variants 😄 http://help.phaseone.com/en/CO8/Output/Export.aspx

    My bad

    It makes perfect sense.

In a catalog, the settings are stored in the catalog which is not the case in a session where it is stored with the file.
So if you packed EIPs in a catalog, what would they contain? Nothing... since settings is stored in the catalog.

It makes perfect sense for an experienced user that knows or cares about internals of it... many people just want things to work. For example if you're sending a PS file, you know that only thing you need to do is to send that PSD file, or in case of LR save settings in XMP or embed in DNG. This is usual and easy to understand. In CO1 for the novice user this EIP or export, catalog vs session is not that obvious. IMHO great software hide complexity behind very simple and streamlined interface, and there are many great examples of that.

From my personal experience I once was a KDE evangelist and even participated as a translation coordinator, loved how much things you can do with it... but eventually so many options made a very cluttered and confusing interface and become tiresome. At the opposite OSX hides much of the UNIX complexity, uses simple language and it's not perfect but it's really fun and convenient to use, it stays out of way and helps when needed.

That said I know that CO1 is a specialist software, and personally I love it, but there's sure room for cleanup and improvement.

Ulf, could you be so kind then to tell me what would be the best path to send an image from a catalog to a retoucher? and import it back? without going out of raw format?

    Hi

If you are having your retoucher doing the processing and not your self (most cases TIF's are sent)
then in an ideal world you would have Export ->Originals (Export as EIP) but this option does not exist.

If you are in a workflow which is high volume shooting and then sending it of to retoucher, then a Session workflow would be far more beneficial.
Once shoot is done and over, you can convert the session to a catalog from File menu.

The settings exist and are availble to software. Whether that software is the converter itself or it is an EIP creator, or any other piece of software for that matter is immaterial.

Phase One obviously didn't implement this feature of packaging fully managed image files as EIPs, but there is no logical reason why it could not be done.

I don't know if this would be a viable option but:

You could take the images you want to send and create a user collection.
Export the user collection as a Catalog and include originals.
    Send the catalog.
