I agree. C1 4 has been a constant source of frustration for our studio.
The workflow and output files are so good we put up with the crashes, metadata problems, slow network performance and soldier on.
On the bad days we throw our hands in the air and crank up 3.7.9. Because it STILL works 😊
I have absolutely no experience in software writing, but it is hard to understand how anybody, let alone a company with Phase One's rep could backwards from a stable release of the best raw convertor bar none (v3) to buggy, crashy and robbed of previously functioning features (v4).

My experience of Phase One in what I call "the early days", 2004, was that they were very responsive. We had some highlight banding issues in conversions from Canon Eos 1Ds MkI files that were sorted out very quickly - it was very gratifying to know that someone was listening and interested in their customers' experience.

All I can imagine is that something significant has happened in the ownership and management of the company or that v4 is such a dog that they're battling to keep the fire from spreading.
