Digital Asset Mismanagement
I'm testing cp1 pro v9 as an option for Aperture and I have to state one can hardly call
the library a DAM solution. This goes along with some strange User Interface decisions.
I think that's because catalogue is a new feature but I'm fairly disappointed.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you cannot:
+ search for albums, projects, or groups in library tool tab
+ reject an image, like rate -1 stars or "x"
+ delete an image (from catalogue) in an album
+ select a few images in the browser and rate/color mark by clicking rate bar below the image
+ list images that are in the catalogue but not in any user collection
+ create album on import (you need to create an album first, then import to that)
+ use global filters. When activating "hide JPEG-files", then .jpeg files are hidden but NOT .jpg
+ delete albums, projects, or groups with keys command + delete
+ alter keyboard shortcuts, that are used by tools
+ moving an intelligent album, links to image reference will break.
+ speaking of coding, Applescript is just useless
update 12/12/15:
+ you cannot create an album from a selection. Like on import, create album first, then add selected images. It's just the wrong way round.
That's it for now, I will update/edit the list after further testing. I'm aware that this might partly be a rant and since I'm new to cp1, I might not have recognized some features and/or there are workarounds to accomplish the above mentioned issues. But that's no workflow or brilliant UI design, rather tedious image searching/administrating.
On the positive site: As a former Aperture User, I'm completely flashed by the editing features.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you cannot:
+ search for albums, projects, or groups in library tool tab
- by the way, what are groups for? When selecting a group in library tool tab, you cannot see its contents in the browser.
+ reject an image, like rate -1 stars or "x"
- edit 12/14/15: learned, that the red flag is used for this
+ delete an image (from catalogue) in an album
- edit 12/14/15: here is the way it works, no albums but anywhere else, thanks to MartinG

Except for albums, keyboard "Shift" + "Delete" works like charm.
In projects, imports and all images.
+ select a few images in the browser and rate/color mark by clicking rate bar below the image
- edit 12/14/15: key to this is toggle main/all variants in the toolbar, works with clicking on stars below the image in the browser, but not with color tags, right click tagging works always
- See item below on altering keyboard shortcuts, I did set delete as command + delete
but it just doesn't work, some sort of coding issue I think
+ alter keyboard shortcuts, that are used by tools
- I mention that, because when in browser view, you can doubleclick an image to get to viewer mode, but not vice versa. I think a lot of people are doing so like scrolling through a collection in browser view, then click an image to view/alter/mark etc, and after that continue scrolling in browser view. So I thought "v" would be a nice shortcut and it's located next to "b" on my keyboard, but that's used by the arrow tool so now it's "n", like "niewer" instead of "viewer".
+ moving an intelligent album, links to image reference will break.
- When moving the ia back in its former place, cp1 will very likely crash. I know this is bug and will be solved in later updates i hope. Right now it is just bad coding.
edit 12/14/15: Learned, that this is a useful feature. Smart albums refer always to the parent collection, they are in. That's nice. Though moving the smart album lets cp1 crash
+ speaking of coding, Applescript is just useless

- edit 12/15/15: fastest workaround so far

- Select images in the browser
- library tool, RIGHT-mouse click on the section header "user collections" (where the + and - buttons are)
- the context menu opens, select "add inside user collection"
- then select "album" and give it a name
- then drag the selected images to that album

Wow, such a great thread for POCP 😄
My 5 cents here.
Folks can you create thread per issue, and combine everything including hate like into single post. That really helps.
2. - PO occasionally checks our forum, but they just do not have time to participate in troll wars\discussions.
3. - Want to hear official PO reply - Open ticket with them, and post results here. This will be much more productive for all community.
4. - Looks like all acknowledge that LACKs some DAM stuff while it does other stuff different that software previously you where working with. It is just gets some learning curve. And looks like PO keep adding new features in DAM area. (Finally keywording from dictionaries)
5. Keep this issues posted as it helps everyone.0 -
Looks like this thread has officially been awarded with 5 cent.
I think, almost everything has been said from/about native C1 users and legal aliens from other "photo apps"
and what one can do that others can't, so let's continue with workarounds, bugs and DAM requests.[quote="BeO" wrote:

until now, this is the fastest way to add images to a new album, I'll edit the opening post.[quote="meanwhile" wrote:

Without a doubt the best solution for those refugees from Aperture who find that C1 (or LR or any other DAM/Editor) does not have features that they consider essential, is to put their current version of OS X and Aperture on a bootable drive and keep using it. None of the alternatives will "clone" Aperture so either learn to live with the new app or stick with Aperture, but there is no point in complaining that the differences constitute a bug or shortcoming.
I'd add that, having spent a lot of time on the trial versions of C1 and LR before deciding not to go the "bootable drive" route, both shifted markedly from "Oh dear, no" to "Yes, I can make this work" the more I used them and became familiar not just with what they could do but how they did it. For various reasons, a move to C1 was my personal choice; I have never regretted it and indeed the more I find out about it the happier I am - I wouldn't dream of going back to Aperture if Apple decided to reverse their decision to pull the plug on it.0 -

But Aperture did have some good ideas in it and there's no reason not to wish for, suggest and agitate for those in CO. Not because CO is bad, or lacking, but because there may be ways to make it better still.
I find CO's interface, and lack of modes, to be features that Aperture users like and are drawn to. The performance of CO's adjustment tools are well beyond most of what Aperture could do at the end of its life.
DAM is clearly CO's weak point and Phase One's development of that area is encouraging; CO9's keywords are a big step up. For a lot of people, Aperture nailed DAM and you can see features such as the project and group in CO that may have roots in Aperture's projects and folders. There's nothing wrong with that. And there's nothing wrong with CO "stealing" more of Aperture's DAM features. If the Lightroom folks prefer Lightroom's DAM, then they have Lightroom. 😊0 -
I agree there is nothing wrong with having wishes for improvements, even if originated from other software. On contrary, this can be a chance for routine-blinded C1 folks because new users can give fresh ideas.
On the other hand, newbies coming from other software also can be routine-blinded (by their former software and routines) so they do not recognise the wonderful possibities C1 gives them.
Ranting and calling C1 a Digital Asset Mismanangement is not the way to convince long-established folks ... 😕
After having familiarized a bit more and adapted to the concepts of C1 many of the original wishes might just fade away as they are no longer applicable or important, others will stay or new wishes will come up, and these might be the really helpful wishes...

Yes, spent some time here and learned that the hard way.
Mentioning, that having been a former aperture user is even worse, will never do that again.
But what would long-established folks want to be convinced of?0 -

Long time user here.
I'm glad people are calling out Phase One on their catalog issues.
The best thing that ever happened to C1 was the demise of Aperture as it brought many potential customers with higher expectations of what a catalog should be.
So don't be hesitant in criticizing a feature that doesn't work correctly. Please continue, I want the catalog to be better.0 -
I guess the point to take note of is that constructive criticism/suggestions are welcome - especially of the poster has asked for help and better understands the "philosophy" of CO. I does work differently and often in ways that are quite productive, once understood.
But new-to-CO users from Lightroom and Aperture are welcome business (I would assume) and may bring good ideas from foreign lands.
So, maybe close this thread (with the provocative title) and reopen new ones for specific improvement ideas? Maybe they will be valid feature requests, or maybe there's the "CO way" which works fine, once understood.0 -
Maybe have a look at the forum rules. Esp. rules nr. 10 and 13. 0 -
