Media Pro and Capture One?
I just got notification of Media Pro v2. I plan to download and try the new version in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, having found virtually no info on the web, I'd appreciate it if some users would share thoughts about:
- Media Pro's catalog capabilities and ease-of-use
- Integration with C1.
On the surface, it looks to me like MP + C1 could be a good Aperture replacement, sans book publishing and social media stuff that I really don't care about.
Thanks.

I'd be interested in more information too.
On the basis of what you can see from the email it is not clear that it offers any significant advantages over C1's catalog (other than an implication that it's "better' - whatever that means - if you have a huge library.
In addition, it sort of implies that Media Pro incorporates the C1 editing capabilities ...
Either way, what do you get that you don't already have, and would need to shell out €189 for?0 -
I may have answered my question, at least for the time being. I just glanced through the last several months' posts on the Media Pro forum and decided that I'll need to run the MP trial myself. It looks like MP and C1 can't use a shared catalog: MP can apparently use C1 sessions, but it looks to me like the real workflow is to ingest and catalog images in MP and then develop them in C1 using some sort of roundtrip linkage. I haven't seen good documentation for this yet, so it's something to experiment with.
Apparently people really like MP's cataloging capabilities and while I saw lots of comments about slower-than-desired development, I saw nothing about performance, catalog size, or other sorts of issues that have been widely noted in this C1 forum.
Maybe Phase One will come out with a nice set of current video tutorials or webinars about MP and C1 integration. If I had David Grover's email address, I'd suggest it to him. In the meantime I think that there's no real rush for me to test MP.
Still, I'd love to see comments here about using the 2 programs together.0 -
Thanks Isme. It looks like I'll be keeping my money 😎 0 -
Nature Isme ,
I'm not hearing about a lot of integration between the two. I hope your optimism correct, but I would suggest that if the "how to" videos don't exist, then it may not be possible or as robust as you hope.
One thing I keep hearing is that you must use C1P in sessions mode. But I have not seen how to do that. My problem is that I have a C1P catalog with 85k images and very few sessions. I'm looking at MP as a solution to my issue of outgrowing C1P's catalog (which is slowing down significantly for me).
I don't mind changing to a Sessions based approach as long the edits I do in C1P show up in MP.0 -
From what I'm seeing, it really does look like MP and C1 don't share the same catalog structure and that real integration only works for C1 sessions. I assume this is because sessions have a defined folder structure that includes the originals and edits, so MP can work directly from that rather than the C1 database. That's really unfortunate.
The main reasons I was interested in MP was to eliminate C1's catalog size/performance limitations, and hoping that MP provided a way of embedding IPTC metadata into the original files. It looks like I'm going to be disappointed on both counts and so will stay with Aperture for cataloging and hope that the C1 team acquires a really good database programmer to solve those problems.
Reading the MP forum posts this morning was a disappointing eye-opener.0 -
When I selected Tutorials links from the MP SE page and was taken through to a number of YouTube videos, I found all of them were uploaded in 2011, even though some of the links refer to 'SE' features. Clearly there was nothing new in SE, which was disappointing.
If I had discovered that the reason for the longstanding shortcomings in CO's image management capabilities not having been addressed before now was that comprehensive and tightly-coupled functionality had been in development in what is now MP SE (even if separately chargeable), then a very plausible and acceptable roadmap would have been disclosed. But, sadly, no.
Not unlike Adobe stalling development of LR so as not to kill the cash cow that is PS, I worry that PO is also conflicted as between CO and MP regarding image management capabilities. However the difference with PO is that neither CO nor MP shows any signs of delivering adequate image management functionality anytime soon.0 -
Can anyone tell me how, using C1P in "sessions" mode, they can view C1P edits in MP? I'd like to learn how this actually works with some specifics as I would test it myself.
So far I've come to a few conclusions which may or may not be correct.
1) MP cannot import or use C1P catalog info in any way. It appears that C1P can import a Media Pro, catalog but not the other way around.
2) Thus, MP will not show any edits done in C1P if those edits are embedded in a C1P catalog database,
3) MP will show C1P edits if C1P was used in "Sessions" mode. (I can't get this to work and would love to see how it works)
4) the marketing info says "Take advantage of Media Pro SE's seamless workflow integration with Capture One Pro. Capture One is a raw converter and photo editing software for professional and passionate photographers. Its easy-to-use precision adjustment tools will assist you in achieving the perfect look for every image. Edit your raw images in Capture One and all adjustments, metadata, ratings, and tags are automatically updated in Media Pro SE."
Basically, I'd like to see this "seamless workflow integration with Capture One Pro" in a tutorial or something useful before I just walk away from MP. For instance, if I were to start using a "only Sessions" approach to image capture and editing in C1P and use MP as the catalog connecting all these sessions, would that work? If I make adjustments in the session using C1P will MP see those edits? Or must I do zero edits in C1P until inhale the images into MP then invoke C1P from within MP?
Maybe I'm just not finding the information.0 -
