workflow without XMP files, possible?

Good question, as I use both. I always use side cars - as I think I was told that some time ago.
I'd like to know, as there are occasions where I still use Lightroom (high iso with noise) and MP messes up the LR edits unless I get all the metadata right in MP first.

I still need to figure out the best workflow with MP and LR.

Jim the latest version of MP (1.2) no longer messes up the edits done in LR when you add metadata. I have tested it ๐Ÿ˜Š

As to the OP question, if you never synchronise your files (write meta data) in MP then all info added in MP stays in the catalogue and there are no sidecar files.

I'll try it with LR 3.6.
I just tried it with a file with the new LR 4 beta - and lost the edits.

Thanks for the info, but how about updating the preview in MP? If the file is changed in CO some time later in the process (say the client wants a different look), won't reloading that in MP not also affect/overwrite the metadata as CO sees it?

PS: I really have to get used to this different workflow ๐Ÿ™„

Playing a bit more with sidecar files. I just noticed that on my MacPro running 10.7.2, MP 1.2 and CO-Pro 6.3.3) MP creates .XMP files and CO creates .xmp files, this is not just confusing to me, but also to my computer, since that all of a sudden sees 2 metadata description files.

One extra reason for me to stay away form these files. I'm totally starting to see less and less reason to use xmp/XMP files.

MO 1.2 works with LR 3.6 as Paul said. However, it messes up LR 4 beta edits. Could be a LR 4 beta issue.
I hope it gets fixed,as the new LR 4 will be a very fine package for my high iso shots.

I did manage to exclude sidecar files by using DNG files.

Thanks for thinking out of the box Roelof, I forgot that PhaseOne software supports DNG.
I'll see if CO convert CR2 files to DNG while shooting tethered. 5DII -> CO-Pro works really well for me.
Otherwise I might have to revert back to EOS utility againร‚ย for shooting tethered.
