Canon 1Ds, CO4 and MS Vista

I have been happily shooting teathered since I purchased my Canon 1Ds when it was first introduced. I recently purchased a new loaded laptop with MS Vista OS, 32 bit which will be dedicated just to the Canon and CO4. in my studio. Vista quickly asked for the drivers for the camera and now I find that Canon does NOT have drivers for the 1Ds. Canon's tech support says ""shoot to a memory card! Sorry that is not the way I shoot, there must be a work around. Does anyone out there have the answer? I have an electrical engineer on staff that would be most happy to speak with a Canon engineer or anyone that might help us resolve this problem. Vista has been out a couple of years, I am hardly an early adopter and I can't be the only Canon 1Ds user that is quite happy with the camera I am using...

    It sounds like an technology-out-of-sync issue you experience which occurs on a daily base in the digital era but existed long before that already (my great 127 roll film twin-reflex sitting idle due to lack of film). If you want to shoot tethered with a Canon 1Ds (first generation) you should stick to an operating system like WinXP. You could try to downgrade your laptop's OS (several computer manufacturers provide this option today).
    Next, be aware that CO 4.x Pro (4.5 and later) support tethering for Canon DSLRs but that does NOT include the 1Ds for the same reason: Canon dropped support for the 1Ds and 1D from their Software Development Kit which is the key for 3rd party developers. So even on a WinXP system you are bound to CO 3.x Pro or use CO 4.x and its hot folder support with EOS Utility to capture tethered.

    Thank you very much, it looks like I am pretty much stuck. I also got this recommendation which may be the way to go:

    Buy another harddrive for the laptop, load Xp pro and the Xp drivers.

    Load all the Canon software and keep the original drive with Vista until they have a solution.

    You can also put the original drive in an external enclosure, format it and use it as a backup drive.

    Since your camera was made before Vista there is not a very good chance of a Canon or Microsoft solution.

    There will be NO solution from Canon (and Microsoft has nothing to do with it). It is called End-of-Life (EOL).
    I assume you have recovery media that came with your new laptop. WinXP is the way to go as long you have your 1Ds and want to shoot tethered. Plain simple. You don't need Vista for your purpose and when you want to use Vista after you sold your 1Ds, just install it from the accompanying DVD.
    If you like to run Vista as well next to XP, you could either make a system dual boot (2 separate partitions, one XP, one Vista) or install Vista on a virtual machine (VM). VM software can be acquired for free if you are on a budget (Virtual PC from Microsoft) and you can install Vista on it. Virtualization is great to keep different software and operating systems separated. Find a friend who is computer shaffy to guide you through the process. You can virtualize XP instead (and keep Vista as is) but you cannot connect to firewire port of your 1Ds from a virtual machine.

    Note: I am aware that you probably never heard of virtual machines and have no idea what I am talking about. 😉 Welcome to the 21st century!
