Posterizing and dithering of darker areas C1 Pro with D300
I'm being bothered by this effect. I've found some ways to diminish it with the levels settings, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I'm using C1 Pro 3.7, sRGB output.
The picture is straight off the camera - no adjustments made in C1. Just cropped and converted to jpeg. The subject's face was exposed nicely, but the darker background has some strange things happening in the shadows, as you can see.

This probably a combination of Colour Noise reduction and Noise reduction.
I would recommend you to set Colour Noise reduction to Manual and pull it down to 0, use the focus tool to see what happens, and then work your way up to a pleasing result in your eyes.0 -
That did help, producing less sudden shifts in tone. It still has a somewhat dithered look to it, but much more natural.
Interestingly, the same picture in Canon File Viewer Utility has nice soft transitions in the darker areas when I'm previewing it. But once I convert it to 8bit tiff it gets a lot noiser, with big green splotches in the darkest areas. C1 shows exactly what you get.
If Canon could get the output to look like the preview, I would definitely use the Canon software for shots where dithering and posterizing in the dark areas appeared to be a problem. But as it stands, I'd say C1 does a better job on the final result.
Thank you.0
