Bringing up the highlights and darkening the shadows has nothing to do with Shadow/Highlight recovery, which is what the HDR tool is all about.

For that you should use Levels or Curves.

I find that I get better results by adjusting (usually Auto) or re-adjusting the Levels AFTER any adjustments to the Highlight/Shadow sliders. My first adjustment is usually Exposure.

Does anyone else want the Highlight & Shadow slider to move to the left also?

As in bringing up highlights and darkening shadows.

What highlight and shadow sliders do (simplified, histogram ranges):
    - stretch highlight range, compress high mid-tone range, maintain white, recover colors and edges
    - stretch shadow range, compress low mid-tone range, maintain black, recover colors and edges

    What it would do:
    - stretch high mid-tone range, compress highlight range, maintain white
    - stretch low mid-tone range, compress shadow range, maintain black

Thinking about it, my answer is no. It doesn't add something to my workflow. It can be done easily and accurately by using the curve tool, because it doesn't need color or edge recovery. For some cases, even levels can do the job.

    Personal opinion.

....I have yet to need to use the Curve tool and find that Levels on Auto delivers the results.
