Damaged cr2 raws

I have suffered damaged cr2 raws as well.

This is my post that I put in as a response to a thread in the Windows 4.x forum.

i recently downloaded and used c1pro 4.5 to shoot tethered to a canon d1s MarkIII- all worked well with all the images displaying in the viewing field-as well as propagating in sequence frame by frame as normal- after capturing approx. 200 images about 1/2 of the images in the capture session-folder became unreadable in the frame by frame view as well as the main viewing window- there was no particular order to the corrupt files some were in sequence others were not- the only view that came up on these files was the canon raw file .cr2 icon - no image just the icon- when looking at the files in the folder by name the all seemed to be named the same as others that were readable -accept for a different capture number- i then tried to open them up in CS3 and it gave me a error message indicating that the file type was not recognized ? This issue happened twice - any idea's on what the problem is or any others experiencing the same issue ? - tcr

I had this EXACT problem today - only I was shooting on a 1DdMkII onto a MacBook Pro. An entire folder of shots disappeared (except for one shot). I tried opening them in C1 Pro 3.7.9, but to no avail. CS3 also failed to recognise the file (all of my programmes are updated to read latest canon files).

To make matters much worse, a number of other files throughout the session show signs of partial corruption (i.e. half the image missing). This was not apparent in the preview or thumbnails in (C1 Pro 4.5) as we were shooting. It was not until I went to process the selects after the shoot where they came out with with parts of the shot missing. Going to 100% preview in C1 Pro 4.5 also showed the corruption.

I have yet to ascertain whether it is corrupting as the file is written (i.e. a problem with the C1 software) or due to bad sectors on the hard drive. However it seems odd that myself and the first poster (also called Tom?) had the same problem across Windows and Mac.

I too have a backup which was made after every shot. I will be checking to see if these files are corrupted when I get to work this morning. Fingers crossed!

    Same here, but traceable:

    - shooting tethered with an EOS 5
    - when the camera is no longer available, all .cr2 files are of 0k size
    - move the files to an other location before detatching the camera an everything is fine

Sidenote: I was shooting in standard mode and did not establish a new session first

Yikes.....you make it sound like this is reasonable and acceptable. Did I misread your intent?

I had the same issue. The files I backed up on a flash drive are fine but those that remained on the Hard Drive were unreadable. The icon appears and the file name is correct but nothing can read or open the files. When I check the file size it say 0 Kb.
fortunately I backed up some of the shots but had to reshoot two.

    Ulf,

I had the same problem after using 4.5 this week.

I've been trying to give C1 Pro4.5 a fair chance.
I Shot tethered with Canon 1dsmk3 all the files were fine (they rendered at 100% and I processed Low Res Jpegs)
The Images were fine when editing.
But after editing I went back to process some Hi res files and about half the images in the shot folders were corrupt (I'll post some screen grabs)
I was unable to recover these images, I was backing up after each shot. The backed up copies are fine, and I'm now using 3.7.9 the process these files.
I've had my laptop checked by apple who have not reported any drive problems.
I almost lost a client over this.
I'll be sending a support case this weekend.

I WOULD WARN PEOPLE NOT TO USE THE CANON 1dsMK3 UNTILL THE CAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM IS ESTABLISHED

    Regards

    Oscar

Not really, just more like - it is repeatable, so it is fixable - And there is a way around it.

C1 support is currently tracing whether it is their code or Canon's driver that is causing the trouble. So I believe there will be a fix soon.

We are still awaiting some response to this far from acceptable issue, C4 is very unstable with constant crashes and damaged RAW files, we also could have potentially lost clients and have already incured costs involved in time spent sorting out the mess.

Was this software ever tested, we are now looking at alternatives.

    regards

    Sorry for the misunderstanding Karsten.

This raises another question......as I recall, Phase always spoke proudly of not using the Canon drivers for anything. Has this changed?...or am I getting too old to remember anything?

The bottom line is that this is a HUGE issue. It would be nice to see some sort of comment from Phase regarding its status. We have work to do and can't have the threat of lost files hanging over our heads constantly ☹️

Very poor - there has still been no comment from Phase, when huang posted the first problem back on the 22nd OCT,a fast response was soon sent pointing the finger at operator error by accidently deleting them, which was immediately replied back to making it clear this was not the problem however radio silence since then !?

What if more people start using Capture One without the knowledge we now have and lose
shoots - extremely likely - perhaps Phase don't want to scare off new customers ? is it not their duty to make a clear warning as from the 22 Oct there IS a HUGE problem, even if they do intend to fix it, BEFORE more people have a disaster..........

    Ditto

Random raw files have been corrupted. Everything looked fine while we were shooting tethered. Thumbs and previews were fine. Late in the day CS1 4.5 ran out of space on a volume, hung and we did a force quit.

On transferring the files to the studio desktop we discovered Previews that had squares of image area black and in some cases areas of the preview built from completely different image set ups. Bizarre.

On looking at the troubled files they appear to be 1 to 5 megs as opposed to 12 to 16 megs. Joy of it all is our originals are corrupt. Thank god we have enough to salvage the shoot.

I previously posted that I had the same issue as you all. I sent a support case and have had numerous emails from Phase One support. In my last reply I suggested them contacting those who have had this happen. If you have any information for them I would suggest you contacting them. I truly believe they are concerned but need more info as to what was going on when this happened. I got an email today about an upgrade 4.5.1 but I don't think this corruption issue has been addressed. I went back to 3.7.8. I had a problem with the camera connecting but they gave me a work around. Here is the link to it.

    Hello

If any one has this problem please create a support case with Phase One.

So far it seem to be isolated to Canon tethered but has not been reproducible except by hard shut down (pulling battery from a laptop or power cord out of a desktop)

Any input will be greatly appreciated but please provide it to us in a support case.

have had the same issue during and after a food shoot,

    Very embarrassing,

    c1pro 4.5, Shooting tethered with a 1ds mk3 to a Mac server.
Part way through the shoot 4.5 crashed and after restarting about 30% of the files were not showing previews.
I thought this was just a lag in loading the previews.
Next day ALL of the images were inaccessible. 4.5 and the finder still show the files are there and 4.5 still shows shutter speed, ISO, focal length and fstop, just no image.
The server has mirrored drives but this only gives us 2 sets of corrupt Raws.

The reshoot has cost the studio in time, money, and reputation.

We have enjoyed v3.7 and were looking forward to the added functionality of 4.5
For now though we can't touch it.

Has anyone found a fix for the corrupt cr2 RAW's

Has anyone seen damaged RAWs that are not CR2s? Or damaged RAWs that did not come from tethered shooting?

I have had this exact problem, big black squares from missing image portions. Before every shoot I reformat the card but on this occasion I did not, also found that while the images showed in Photo Mechanic, they were corrupted in capture one. This led me to think the problem may have been C O, however Photo Mechanic displays the embedded jpeg previews (that are always part of the CR2 ). The files were probably corrupted before going through capture one, it just was not apparent because i was viewing the non corrupted jpeg preview. The situation was salvaged to a certain point as i was able to extract the previews in PM, they were OK for a 6x9 print, the client was satisfied (this was for a wedding and 60% of the images were fine)

A support case does help a lot when it is done correctly. If the issue is repeatable, the solution can be quick. If it is not repeatable things get complicated and take a while. The better the description, the more people report details, the quicker the bug is fixed.

I was able to repeat corrupted .cr2 files and I opened a case. I received some beta stuff to test today (about 2 days after opening the case). I was able to test it and that beta stuff fixed the problem for me. So the next update of C1 4.5 will solve the corrupted .cr2 problem that I experienced.

It is sad that there is a bug like this, but PhaseOne was very responsive, did communicate well and was eager to solve the issue. There is no reason to flame them.

Quick update for you guys... we do have several users with support cases who have been very helpful in providing us with information about this unfortunate error and we have been working very hard over the last few days to progress towards a fix. Sorry I do not have a release date for a full fix for this but please be aware that we are taking it very seriously and will bring it to market as soon as we can.

I had a similar response from my support case. I was pleased with the way that my support case was dealt with and the speed of responses. Of course the outcome was fatal. They suggested that some other software that I don't own might be able to rescue some data from the corrupt files. I think Phase One should be supplying the software.

This incident has made me question my support of Capture One software. How can this sort of thing happen? What really scares me is what else might go wrong with CO4 Pro. I don't want to have something else happen that will cause image corruption on irreplaceable files. I am going to have to give the competition a try, just to see if I can live with what they have to offer.

Has anyone managed to rescue the files that were corrupt?

    Hello,

Capture One 4.5.2 just released to solve the issue of corrupted CR2 files. http://www.phaseone.com/Content/Downloads/CO4.aspx

The cause of the problem was that Mac OS would write the files to cache and not fully to the hard drive. When a crash occurs in the software or OS, the placeholders remain on the disk, but the files, which were only held in cache are lost. That we can reproduce 100% of the time. The new version contains steps to ensure that the files are written to disk and verified. Worst case scenario would be that the computer loses power completely while shooting. In that situation at maximum 1-2 files could be lost simply due to not fully being written yet. Even that is very unlikely as the problem would have to occur immediately after capture.

There are also other bug fixes design to solve crashes occurring during settings/style copy and apply

Thank you....AND thanks for taking the time to explain the problem. I must say, I'm cautiously optimistic about the future...
already TWO maintenance releases? Very cool....and very unlike the days of old.

Whilst the speed of response is excellent it is very troubling that a new product has needed two bug fixes for critical problems in 3 weeks. It does not speak well for the quality of the testing especially when it was so long delayed.

And bear in mind that there are many non-critical bugs out there that have still to be fixed. One I raised Ihat has been acknowledged and suggested it might be fixed in 4.6! For me there is no 4.5 workaround but fortunately I am happy to stay with 3.7.x for the foreseeable future.
