75 seconds per image on from a 40D seems a bit excessive to me but you don't state what speed the processor was. My own experience seems to indicate that, provided the machine is not asked to do too many other things at the same time, Capture One 4 likes to have fast memory but does not necessarly require a great deal of memory.

A a mater of comparison, until about 9 months ago, I was running Capture One 4 on a 2.8GHz Pentium D (2 cores broadly the same as the one in a Pentium4 ) with 1.5 GBytes of DDR2-800 memory and it was taking about 25 seconds to process each image from my 5D.

I think a Pentium processor is a bit old to run C1 4 effectively. I have a 4 year old Pentium machine, and C1 barely runs, but I have on my newer XP SP3 machine (2 gigs memory, Intel E8400) C1 4 runs great. My D300 files take 20-25 seconds to process where as I experience similar results as you on the Pentium machine. You may want to look into a new machine.

Besides processor speed (I agree with previous poster), disk speed and to some extent amount of RAM play an important role as well. Disk speed is important because the output file must be written to disk. I found that in general 50% of the time it took to create an output file was disk related.
Insufficient RAM in a machine slows down both processor and disk due to disk swapping. A 2 GB RAM machine with WinXP is a narrow escape if you have no other application running than CO4, which is often not the case. You can easily monitor the performance and how heavily resources are used with Task Manager.

Thanks for the very quick and informative replies they have given me much to think about .For info Wade the processor speed is 2.8GHz and I note your comparison
