Cropping question

Some of my images have a crop applied on import, as shown as a greyed out area around the photo in the image browser.
Wondering if I set a tool incorrectly, or is this a default setting. I would like to view the complete image and do my own cropping.
Also, in the cropping tool, how do you adjust to create a certain print size? e.g. I ordered some 20 x 30 prints. When I uploaded them to the website, the edges had to be cropped to fit the size of the print.

  In brief, it's almost certainly to do with automatic lens corrections being applied on import.
