Moving a catalog

I am trying to move my catalog database from my portable to my mac pro. I just copied it over and changed the permissions, now I have the photos off line. I tried locate and it did not fix the issue.

Is there a tutorial for beginners on how to correctly more a catalog from one machine to another?
