MacBook Pro Overheating
So much discussion about MBP problems. Is anyone using the 17\" with 7200RPM HD? I hear they are experiencing severe heating problems and logic board failures. Runs much hotter than the same MBP with 5400 RPM HD. Any practical experience out there?
Hot to find out. Need to update my laptop.

I'm running a 15\" MBPro with a 7200rpm drive and haven't had any problems as of yet (had it for a couple months now). It does get quite hot though. Not having had a laptop previously I'm not sure how close it is to standard laptop heat. I do also use a Podium Pad to help keep the heat down though - not convenient if your in the field but if it's in one place in a studio for long periods I'd recommend it. 0 -
Firmware update for 17 MacbookPro just released today! Good luck. 0 -
Thanks for the comments. Darko, What is a Podium Pad and where did you get one?

These are great basically a rubber mat with raised adjustable columns to alow air to flow under your laptop also you can adjust the angle of your laptop.
can be purchased from any computer store or the Apple store.

Just as Derek said, it's simply tilts the back of the laptop up to allow airflow underneath. I think there are a few products like this out there but the Podium Pad seems to be the best as it also swivels which can be handy and the height is adjustable. (it can also be used backwards for a reverse tilt if that's how you get your kicks). Here's the site - http://www.roadtools.com/podium.html.
I bought mine at an Apple store, but they did not have any on the floor. I had to ask a sales rep who was kind enough to dig around in the back room even though he was clueless as to what I was asking for. Luckily he still managed to find one in the stock room.0 -
I use the Podium Pad most of the time backwards elevating the front. Most of the carts at the rental studios are waist high and the MacBook Pro's monitor only goes back so far.
Also one day we had a cart that had a marble top and my laptop sat directly on it. It is the coolest I have every felt it.0
